Default Consumer Reports Tire Guide

For those of you looking to buy tires... you should checkout the latest Consumer Reports article...

In its most extensive tire report to date, Consumer Reports put 52 tires through 14 different tests. Scores are arranged in typical easy-to-read charts, and both car and SUV/light truck tires were tested, although no winter tires were included.

I have not yet read it, but I am told the Yokohama AVS ES100 was dead last and the Falken ZEIX512 was tied for 1st for all season tires... I'll have to pick up a copy tomorrow.. will let you guys know what I find.

Just picked up a copy... for all season tires, the Falken ZEIX512 came in first by a wide margin...

For High Performance tires, the top was Goodyear F1 (though these tires suck once worn about 1/3)... second was the Toyo T1S! Yokohama ES100, BFG and Kumho 712 round out the bottom dwellers...

Im not sure what "Energy" the 6 has, but the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus is ranked 6th place but is also the most expensive out of all the tires in the category. I put in parenthesis the poor ratings given by CR.

Bridgestone Turanza LS-H
Bridgestone Potenza RE950 (very poor snow)
Micehlin Pilot XGT H4
Dunlop SP Sport A2
Micehlin Energy MXV4 Plus

Sumitumo Srixon 4
Yokohama A550H (poor snow and noise)
Continental CH95 (poor dry braking)
Kelly Charger HR (poor rolling resistance)
Cooper Lifeliner Touring SLE (a bunch)
Yolohama Avid H4 (a bunch)
Toto TPT (poor wet braking and ice, but EXCELLENT handling and hydroplaning resistance)
Goodyear LS (very poor dry braking)
Uniroyal TigerPaw HR
General Exclaim
Firestone Affinity (absolute worst in everything but ride)

Ultra-High Performance Tires:
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3
Toyo T1S
Continental SportContact2
Michelin Pilot Sport (poor noise)
Dunlop SP Sport 9000
Pirelli PZero Nero
Bridgestone S03
Hankook Ventus Sport K104
Yokohama AVS ES100 (poor conering)

I find it truly sad that none of the auto magazines will commit to tire testing.

For a good number of years Car and Driver was doing some semi-regular testing. The comparisons were awesome and (to my knowledge) set a precedent for putting evaluations of high performance tires in the hands of consumer. I wish they had never stopped doing this testing. Nowadays Consumer Reports does more tire testing than any of the auto enthusiast mags. How pathetic is that!?!

Road & Track used to tire test too, we still use the famous comparison of Futura Ultra Z vs Goodyear F1s in our brochures for the Ultra Zs.

Though what I like about Consumer Reports is nothing is handed to them, no advertising dollars. They purchase everything like a normal consumer. This produces accurate testing and reviews, because you never know when a magazine might get a special test version of a vehicle to make it look better than the one at the dealers.

The magazine What Car (UK) are doing a long term test on a 6 TS2. In the June issue they fitted new tyres with the aim of reducing tyre noise, They fitted Dunlop SP Sport 01 tyres, which gave a "noticably reduced noise level"

There is also a recent UK magazine consumer test on tyres, which for the moment I can not find. Will look
