WhoDiddy,
Have you thought about saving some money up and getting forged wheels? Could drop a serious amount of weight that way. (Even more then stock) |

Yeah if your lookin for racing wheels i'd save up a little and look at brands like Kinesis, Roja, Volk, Centerline, Velox, Adven, etc. I'd say try to find something under 16lbs for 17's, preferably around 14-15lbs or so and forged if possible.

One of the lightest reasonably priced forged wheels in the Centerline Impulse. In a 17x7 it weighs in around 12.5lbs! I believe they are around $250/ea. Not cheap but super light and not bad looking. Pair those with some Toyo T1-S or Pirelli P-Zero Neros (both around 21-22 lbs) and you have a wheel/tire combo that only weighs a couple more pounds than the stock rims to do alone. centerlines are a good deal and cheap compared to most forged wheels out there. I know a girl that has some and loves em.

If you're looking only for go and not show, you might consider getting into even smaller 16" rims. There are many cheap, lightweight 16" wheels.
Rota Slipstreams are $500 SHIPPED and only 13.5 lbs. They probably wouldn't look special, but they sure would be fast on the track. To get show and go, I think you're going to have to go with forged wheels, which are expensive. You'll have to choose two of the three: Looks, lightweight, or cheap.

actually im running rota subzero's 16" with toyo T1-S's and they are light and excellent traction. The wheels are 14.5lbs and the tires are ~19lbs.
They arent forged but they have a different casting method to make them stronger and lighter. They might not have enough "bling" for your taste but they look good to me. |

forged is a higher pressure method and higher quality method of creating wheels as opposed to your typical aluminum casting. Therefore you can have much stronger wheels and also make thinnner spokes which in turn reduces weight. SO you have stronger lighter wheels in the end. Then the stronger lighter wheels require less braking power than your bigger heavier wheels.
Dont we all want turbo :) |

Everything else being equal, a forged wheels can be lighter than a comparably strong cast wheel. You mentioned that you wanted a lighter wheel to enhance the performance of your car, so that's why I and others recommended a forged wheel. A cast wheel can be made just as light as a forged wheel but it won't be close to as strong. If you only use them on a smooth racetrack, it's probably not going to be a problem. For a daily driver, the usual road hazards such as big potholes and train tracks can spell a quick death of overly lightweight cast wheels. A good budget solution would be 16" lightweight cast wheels such as Rota's or Konig Heliums as others have also mentioned.
Just so you know, saving 1 lb of rotational weight is equal to saving 4 lbs of static weight. So if your bling bling chrome wheels are 30+ lbs, going to a 15 lb wheel would provide gains in acceleration equal to dropping 240 lbs from the car (15x4=60 60x4=240). That would be good for about 2 to 3 tenths in the quarter. |
