Default VVT Warranty Extension Program notice from Mazda

Today I received a letter from Mazda saying they are extending warranty service to owners of Mazdas with the L3T (2.3 Turbo) engine to 7 years or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The coverage is for two conditions:

1. VVT actuator and/or timing chain noise
2. Heavy white exhaust smoke caused by oil leaking into the turbo exhaust

If you didn't get a letter from Mazda you might look into it.

I have the VVT noise, but my issue is the car has 96,000 miles. I guess we'll see if the dealer will cover it.

Matt

I have what *sounds* like the chain noise, but only at neutral throttle (most noticable between 2500 and 3k) - but its only really noticable with the AP tune... Very VERY strange to me. Its still there with the stock tune, but its much less noticable, to the point I know they wouldn't hear it.

VVT- COLD start, listen for very brief rattle or clicking sound from the area around the oil filler cap. Sound usually only lasts for a second, just long enough for oil pressure to build.

Chain- Warm engine completely, turn engine off (really, do I even need to add that part??), remove oil filler cap & stick a finger in there and lift up on the chain. Should be very little to no play. Feel the inside valve cover over the chain for scarring from the chain.

There is a LOT more to both of these, but if you've not (yet!) seen symptoms, this will give you something to look/listen for

Yes, I may be screwed, but I posted anyway because the program includes a reimbursement option for people who already paid for the repair, so I thought I'd let the group know.

Nice, I'll keep an eye out for the letter for the smoke issue but I'm sure I'd be out of luck due to mods... worth giving it a shot if I could find a mod friendly stealership, I'd love a new turbo. My local dealership is about as anti-mod as they come - wouldn't tighten a bolt on a heatshield while my car was in their bodyshop because I have a catback.

I still don't understand why the dealer doesn't just warranty all MS6's with this problem with a recall, it was obviously a problem from the factory, not a user error.

I just got the letter today too, and I also have that 1 second rattle when I start up the car cold.

I also have 70,435 miles......just over the warranty limit. I'm calling the dealership tomorrow to see if they will still honor it, but I doubt it. Last time I went there for the TSB for the clutch, they basically told me I didn't know how to drive a stick.

Thank you Mazda for waiting all those years to make sure the overwhelming majority of us are over 70K to decide to release this letter. Its not like the VVT or smoking turbo were known for years to the community...I'm not surprised from a shady car maker that builds poor products to pull a stunt like this.

Guess what I'm checking tomorrow morning!

Thank goodness I live in Tampa, over 11 dealerships. One has to be okay with a cat-back
:-P
