For those of you that don't know what an ATP VES is - it's a boost actuated exhaust dump. The valve opens at 10psi and dumps the exhaust. Anything less than that, the exhaust will flow through the stock exhaust (or whatever exhaust is in place)

We all know that the best performing exhaust for a turbo car is 'no exhaust'

That being said, I'm wondering other peoples thoughts regarding how the ECU would deal with this decrease in backpressure. Obviously it will allow the engine to flow more easily and the turbo to spool quicker.

I'm wondering if any of that can or will affect how the ECU reacts. And if so, will it react adversely.

Your thoughts and productive comments are appreciated.

PM 4drhtrd about this I am sure he has a few suggestions for you.

Seriously though I think if it is managed well, with tuning ,it can be very efficent. I have heard people having good results with this pc.

Strangely I think you would want it to do the opposite. Have it dump the exhuast under 10psi to let the turbo spool faster, then close. Once the turbo is spooled (assuming you have an aftermarket free flowing exhuast) I don't see a cut out being a huge boost. But the decrease in inital spool time might be awesome, even in between shifts.

Unless you have a large slow spooling turbo I don't think it's necessary-our tiny turbo can already hit 20+ psi by 2500 rpm. Without some very effective boost control, you'd just end up with a very large boost spike.

+1

that screams boost creep... you would need some management for that.

So boost creep is the main source of concern?

I was really wondering if the ECU is going to freak out and go lean or something - who knows... only time will tell.

Yeah, I think that's why 4drhtrd's motor blew. QTP's cutout is switched electrically, so that one might be better for this ECU.

i had the qtp on my car for afew months but with the stock boost controler the car was spikeing at 21-22 in first gear, this scared me so i removed it and put it on my drag car.

qtp is cheeper and better than atp's cut out. the qtp on my drag car is wired to a wot swich and my nos window switch to control when it opens and when it shuts, also adding a reostat you can control how much it opens to control boost spikes and creep

i love the qtp cut out but i cant stand qtp's customer service also if you buy one they are $50 cheeper at summit than qtp's web page.

If I remember correctly, he had removed/disabled his MBC and was using his foot to control boost. While trying to race a motorcycle he got a little carried away and supernovaed his engine.

As far as QTP vs. VES - there have been numerous complaints about the QTP electric motor frying due to the heat involved. On a drag car I could see it working since it's not running for hours on end. The VES is completely mechanical so there aren't any issues w/heat.

I am seriously debating the QTP cutout.

I honestly don't like the drone these catbacks are making.

I ran one on my p5...it was lounder than a mack truck....

I currently have Street Unit TP and intersted in having it welded into it!
