Well I've got 4 stone chips on my hood, about half the size of a pencil eraser, and yes all the way to the metal ...... Is it worth buying touch up paint and blobbing, drying sanding and buffing myself? or cheaper to have pros do it?

Only put yourself or a body guy through this trouble if you plan to take some preventative measures after you're repaired the surface. Plan to install some 3M film or buy a bra, otherwise don't trouble yourself. With Mazda paint, the chips will be back in a few weeks.

If I ever buy another brand new car, it's gonna be heavily armored with 3M before I drive it off the lot.

Not sure where you are from but if you are not repainting the hood, you need to seal the chips otherwise it will rust and blister your the finish around it, especially if your northeastern. Using touch up paint is not my fav. cuz. it leaves the finish lumpy. I would seal it first then have time to think about further action.
My recommendation is our sealant-P-39 Prowax.com
Good luck.

That is the way I went, I got venture shield over the 3M though. Venture has a life time warranty against yellowing, and is a much thinner (less visible) film. But yea, after 3 months of ownership of my new speed6, I realized there were little nicks EVERYWHERE on the hood. I could not believe how easily this hood chipped. Anyways, I ended up payin ~$200 for The Last Detail (amazing place) to touch up my hood/bumper/fenders. They did such a good job that you simply can not tell where the chips were. The venture then set me back about ~$600 for the hood/bumper/fenders/mirror/grille. Now that I think about it, you could just get your hood repainted for $800 after you accumulate a lot of chips..... For me the issue was actually seeing the chips though, lol.

Dealer repainted my front bumper last week so it's clean now, but the hood has those nicks still.
