42.7% of Mazda6's are being dumped into fleet sales.
Mazda6 Fleet Sales

A high percentage of fleet sales decimates resale value. I was aware that residual value on the 6 was poor before I purchased my 2007 and purchased the 6 anyway since I do not plan on selling it for at least 5 years.

But, Damn, I did not know that Mazda was dumping 43% of them into fleet!
GM and Ford have been reducing % of fleet sales to increase the value of their vehicles. It is really messed up that Mazda would take the Chrysler route of selling into fleet instead of reducing production to meet demand.

----fleet sales----

For the domestic automakers, 2007 was supposed to be the year that they weaned themselves off the fleet sales teat. For GM, they've been doing pretty well, limiting their offloads of 10 or more vehicles to one company to around 24-percent of total sales. Chrysler and Ford, on the other hand, are still relying on the practice, coming in at 36-percent and 34-percent respectively – the highest of any automakers.

While this keeps overall sales up, it's a proven fact that it increases depreciation and limits profits.

Ford's diet began with reducing fleet sales by 67,000 units to rental agencies, when compared to the first five months of 2006, with the intention of scrapping another 67k by the end of 2007. For the Blue Oval Boys, that's a lot of revenue – even the small amount garnered from fleets – and with sales in decline, it's a tough pill to swallow.

Chrysler-branded vehicles account for 47-percent of the automaker's sales, while Dodge comes in at 37-percent and Jeep lets go of 20-percent of their vehicles to rental agencies. According to a statement issued to Automotive News, the intention is to reduce fleet sales at Chrysler to 21-percent of its total by 2009.

Who's going to fill the fleet niche then? Nissan, Mazda, Kia and Hyundai are going strong, but all these automakers are well aware of the perils of overindulgence at the fleet sales trough, and they have no plans to follow in the domestic's footsteps.

Well I don't know about you guys but I bought my vehicle planning to own it until it's no longer driveable. Resale values on vehicles are crap anyways. If I did sell my Mazda it would only be to trade it in and get some value out of it for a new Mazda.

A poor resale value certainly doesn't detract from how well this car drives.

Well, I bought an 18 month old S wagon with 15,500 miles for $16,000. 18 months before that it sticked at $24,000. I've never had unrealistic expectations of resale value on my car.......

I think one of the worst vehicle investments you can make is the purchase of a new Mazda 6. You lose a ton of value instantly. Gas mileage is so-so, leaning towards poor. Initial quality and reliability ratings are on the bad side. However, they do have very good crash ratings and my insurance increase was next to nil coming from a 15 year old Integra.

But yes, MANY owners of 05-07 models are likely upside down on their loan.

I'm only upside down by about a grand or so. So thats not TO bad. I didn't buy my car in hopes to get money out of it anyways. When I am done with it it's just going to go as a trade nothing else.

I think this is a great thing for the shopping I plan on doing. I want to get a nice low mileage used 6s GT in 6 months, I think it'll be perfect.

last time i checked at Avis or Hertz dont remember seeing too many Atenzas (infact i saw none)

so if indeed the 42% is true, where is it going to? performance driving schools?

All of that is not so true. I bought a 2006 Mazda 6i sport w/bose and moon off the lot for 19,500. The sticker was 24,600 and noone had ever driven it. It had 8 miles, and i handed my salesman a check for $19,500 and it was all said and done. Now one year later, I can get about 17500 minimum for the shape its in, so 2000/12 months=less than 200 bucks which is lower than the lease payment per month where I would get NOTHING in my hand after 3 years but here I get a vehicle. The lease payment was 36 months at 285 per month with 3200 down a year ago. Full service a mile away from home and a loaner car everytime on the dealership tab, not so much to complain about here.

Its true I might be a little different and just bought the car out so I dont pay any financing or anything like that, but i always believe in living under your means. I could easily have a 3 series siting in the garage and make finance payments on it, but why? I ask why some of you buy a fully loaded car valued at upwards of 30 and make huge finance payments on it, does it ever make sense?
