Thumbs up

Here is the situation:

I convinced my friend to get a Mazda6 and he's interested in a 2007 Mazda6 I Sports VE. The MSRP for his particular model with added options is around $19400. He's going to trade in his 2006 Toyota Prius, the Toyota Prius' value on KBB is around $17500. A local Mazda dealer offered us $14950 for the Sports VE edition he wanted, a VE model with stick shift. That price is definately an attractive offer, but we didn't tell them about the trade in car yet.

So my question is, will he be able to get money back with the Prius he's going to trade in? Any other tricks we should avoid when we go?

If you get a good price on the 6 they may lowball the trade-in. He knows what price he wants for the Prius. Dealers will usually pay a thousand or so under KBB. Add in tax and random fees to the 6 it might break even.

If he's not happy with what the dealer offers, then sell it privately. It shouldn't be hard to unload a newish Prius for good cash. I'd buy the 6 and once it's on the road, sell the Prius myself. Of course, you'll need to afford the overlap for the brief time you need it.

Another thing is that currently in the market Toyotas hold their value well. When my mom wanted to get her 530, we traded in the old toyota Sienna, 2001 with 50k miles. We got about 10k on the trade-in. With a Prius you should be able to get a very decent trade in value.

You never know about trade-in value until you ask but from my experience the best deals always have the worst trade-in offers. When I bought my 6, I got a trade-in value right at KBB's Good condition. You'll never get KBB Excellent no matter how immaculate the car is. They'll find something to knock it down a notch over. A friend of mine was looking at getting a used Prius but had problems finding one since they disappeared rather quickly off the used car lots. You dealer will be able to sell the Prius fast. Don't give it away. Your friend can probably sell it himself just as quickly.

Prius is one of my least favorite cars.. behind the older Saturn's with the lights really close to each other in the front

Anyways.. just sell it your self
As far as the price goes.I was 16,300 before tax/title with automatic/gas cap/wing.. so just minus the stuff and shoot for around there... or less if you think i did bad.
Think it was around 5,300 below msrp.. i don't remember

hope that helps!

if you want to get the best out of a trade it the only way to get the highest possible bid is to shop around. Go to other dealerships and ask for a quote on your trade. And get them all on paper. Then if you find one that is higher than what the mazda dealer quoted you, bring that slip with the trade in price that you got from the other dealer and show them. They will most likely give you more than that. go to edmunds and find what other are paying for the specific model your friend wants to buy. don't ever go by MSRP. there are also $1000 cash back and $1000 MAC financing for the car your friend wants. so the price the dealer quoted you isn't bad. its just he won't get the $1000 MAC because he won't be financing it. just see what you can get for your trade from other dealerships. but he might not actually get any money back. Depends on how much taxes he ends up paying. But if he does the dealer should cut him a check

With the demand for the Prius quite high as gas prices start to climb again, he should be able to sell it quite quickly ina private sale and make much more than he would in trade.
