So I didn't like the bose POS sound system, so i decided i needed an upgrade. Although, my challenge was to conserve as much space in the trunk as possible, so i could still use it for day-to-day use + whatever i may throw at it. So here aerf some pictures from before - durring - after pictures w/ details prior to. A list of materials and specifics to come soon..
(For a list of Materials and Tool list, shoot me a PM. Although, they will come up soon..) Before: -Below is a picture of a regular MS3 ![]() Durring: -The Interior of the "box" which was left open (and shitty) for a few weeks in the middle of the project which consists of 8 2X4 (2/side) which were drilled and gorilla taped together. Then, we put a layer of padding around it (home depot FTW), for sound deading and of course put a layer of dynamat. Although, with the project finished now w/ the closed box, i'll need 1 more layer of dynamat. ![]() ![]() -This is how it looked prior to the stretching the trim on. ![]() -the hand hole. Easy to pick up for easy removal. Then we have the finger grooves so i can lift it w/ easeeee ![]() ![]() To make the top surface of the sub enclosure/trunk floor a bit more study and secure, we added another layers of 2/3in of MDF in the center. Also, in between the two MDfs, we put a nice thick towel in between them two and screwed the two MDfs together so they don't rattle and what not. ![]() -Then a few weeks later (busy w/ work then school), i found time today to Finnish the box structure of the sub enclosure so I could close it off all together.. So I kept my original design of the "box frame" made by the 2X4s, and added "lego" pieces that fit like a glove to go around the brackets located underneath and the box frame it self. JIGSAW FTW!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -Lastly, i had to close off the back end of the sub enclosure, so what i did was get some cardbox box and traced the trunk line. Then, from the back 2X4 stack to the bottom of the trunk, to screw it to the 2X4s. I cut it with the jigsaw and then put rubber garage door weather seals on the bottom to seal it to the dynamat. ![]() Aftermath: I bought synthetic suede from a local store and then got "MazdaSpeed" embroided in the center from a stitching place in the mall, pressed it on top of a layer of the blue foam as well as some that sheet you put under rugs so they don't slip on wooden floors. I used 3M spray adhesive to glue everything down and then i stapled it on the side to hold everything in place. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lastly, YES I WILL BE PUTTING A GRILL ON MY SPEAKERS!! Everyone tells me that, and its coming - soon. I'm also putting the all weather mat in the back for the the heavy duty stuff. ![]() (The Amp and Capicator are located under the passenger seat. Pictures of that are to come soon as well.) So what do you guy think?

Yeah, it does now...
I had the box open for a few weeks (when we saw eachother...) but finally found some time and inspiration to seal the box up, all together..

So instead of using a 4x4 you screwed and duct taped 2x4's together. You ran a layer of that thin cell foam around it. You made 1 wall out of cardboard box and duct taped garage door seal to it. To finish, the top just rests on the "frame" you made. I 'm not sure what to say. The very top with the Mazdaspeed logo stitching looks very nice. I just can't see the rest as being sealed or what exactly it is supposed to be. "i found time today to Finnish the box structure of the sub enclosure so I could close it off all together.. " Finnish? As in this is how they make sub boxes in Finland? What's going on here? |

The reason i used the 2X4s was because i already had them layin around in the house, and so there was no use of buying more wood. The wall in the back is not cardboard, its a 3/4in thick MDF, and to seal it to the trunk of the car, i put garage door seal to it, and it wasn't sticking with adhisive nor was it being pressed on through a stapple gun, so duct tape ftw!... The type Rs are hitting just like they were in the dual 10" box i bought from best buy. I wasn't trying to go for any awards here with this project, i just wanted to be able to use my trunk and have subs. So i came up with this as i went on...

Are you still using the same headunit? And does you hear a slight rattle from the tweeter in the driver's side door? I can't figure it out if it's the tweeter that is blown... or if it's change in the change compartment that is rattling in my Speed3.
