I've always wanted an RX-8, I think they're so hot looking.

Ive always liked the look of the Rx8, but Ive just never been able to get around the dismal fuel economy. I have a friend with one that does ~85% highway driving, with the rest being rural and light traffic that only gets ~18-20mpg(depending on AC) without much hard driving. I got that much with my '98 4.0L, 2" on 31's jeep cherokee before I traded it for the 6.

When I owned my '06 RX-8, I was averaging 18 miles to a gallon w/95% freeway. With a 100 mile comute a day, I was filling up every other day. You can't drive this car like an old granny.

I drive so little that I don't really care about fuel economy, but I just can't really get over the fact that it's not really all that fast. I love the car, and if I was going to get another car right now, it would be the RX-8. But the new Lancer Evo GSR costs about the same, so that's mighty tempting.

the rx-8's qualities are the sum of its parts. Not just one thing or another. To me, it is a wonderfully balanced car. It doesn't fight against you when hitting a set of curves. The chassis is so well tuned that it works with the driver to deliver a stunningly satisfying driving experience. It's not about hard stiff shocks and butch engine to make up for the driver's mistakes. The RX-8 is all about driving with momentum. You carry the speed deep into the corner before braking and let it use its inertia to swing out of the apex. It's not about point and shoot that most drivers are only capable off. It's not on/off. It's analog instead of binary.
The only other car that I can remember that also provides the thrill is the S2000 and Cayman S. Both also very well balanced sports machine. Let's not kid ourselves thinking our FWD sedans are in the same league as this Mazda flagship. Be glad that at least Mazda is thinking out of the box and I for one loves variety. |
