GM Cutting Production of 6 Sedans

GM is working with the UAW to build a new strategy in lieu of slumping sedan sales, especially as truck, SUV and crossover sales continue to be strong. Several GM vehicles are likely to be on the chopping block by 2020, including:

Chevrolet Sonic
Chevrolet Impala
Chevrolet Volt
Buick LaCrosse
Cadillac CT6
Cadillac XTS

The Volt will likely be replaced by a hybrid crossover. This will likely mean their Hammatrack factory, which builds most of these vehicles, will be heavily restructured for future truck, SUV and crossover sales

I would get on my soap box, but I'll be preaching to the quire.

Leave the unions and government out of it and we'll start seeing good products again, or the companies will go away as per capitalism.

The Volt will likely be replaced with the Bolt. Its a nice if not egg-looking EV.

Customers want different-looking things now, that's all. We went from hose and buggy to horseless carriage to some real lead-sleds, through some wars where cars were real scarce, through big boat cars here and there, and now we're looking at a change in buyer trend toward practical if not very attractive "crossover" type large sedans with a hatch on them.

This too, shall pass.

Where we go next, though... that could be shuddering. Unless of course it is UP, as in to the skies.

GM (and Ford) have not had this strong a line up since their glory days of 30s and the golden era of late 50s to early 70s. The alpha platform on which the CTS,CTS-V,ATS-V,Camaro etc are built is considered one of the best if not the best in the world. The automobile industry is changing as a whole, and i don't think its got anything to do with the unions. With electricity and varying levels of autonomous vehicles being the future, and the individual ownership of cars itself in question, companies will have to balance between what sells well today vs preparing for the unknown future.

I do doubt if they'll axe the Impala, i see them everywhere around here and its a staple of fleet sales. Now Malibu, that i can see going away for good.

The unions and government are forcing manufacturers to build less fuel efficient SUVs and trucks???

I'm betting GM would not base that decision on whether they 'see them everywhere around here' but rather on the following simple facts:

June 2017 Sales:

Equinox: 29,182
Cruze: 12,828
Colorado/Canyon: 12,147
Malibu: 10,812
Traverse: 10,780

Impala: 2,808

Bye bye Impala......

I don't see the government or the unions having much to do with this. This is just the normal machination of the US automakers: Chase the money cow. Right now, SUVs, trucks and CUVs rule the market and make the money. So why continue making cars that have far less profit margins if no one will buy them?

This will have ramifications. Cars are arguably more fuel efficient, and the national CAFE is going to get stricter. This means that, as the cars are taken out of the equation, the remaining fleet will be forced into being more efficient. That means smaller motors, less content to shave weight and public disgruntlement over the decreased power and options.

Sorry guys, I meant that (in general) the poor decision making of large manufacturers is largely influenced from government or union entities.

If GM was following the market trend, they wouldn't be losing ~9k per Volt/Bolt that's sold....and wouldn't have needed to be bailed out in the first place.
