Is it a rod knock? Or cam, or vvt? Is it the end of the road for this very nice car?

My friends car is a black 2007 Mazda 6, with the 6 Cyl and manual trans, 126kmi. She has kept the tan interior in pretty much pristine condition. She had some life events and unfortunately let the oil change interval pass about 4 or 5 months ago. The idiot light came on, 2 quarts were added, and then it started needing oil to be added frequently. It seemed to still run fine even after this, but it just developed a knocking sound on acceleration. I have been reading all of the various posts on here, but I am not finding the answers I am looking for. I think the sound is coming from up higher on the engine, rather than from the bottom, but I only briefly heard it. It makes no noise at idle. If you bring the RPMs up a couple of K it makes the noise, and under initial acceleration is is quite loud, I heard it as she drove the car away. At consistent highway speed there is no noise. She took it to the dealer, and they said its a rod knock and she needs an engine. But it sounded like a quick 'diagnoses', not a thorough analysis. I get that a dealer is not interested in 'fixing' the problem, other than putting a new engine into it. The car is not worth $4k for a new engine. I tried to find a local shop that knows Mazdas, but no luck. If anyone happens to know of a Mazda specialist in the Saratoga NY area please let me know. She is ready to give up on the car, but it is a shame as the car is so clean. Any thoughts on if this car is saveable? I am not setup to do work on it myself, so I need to find someone to fix it if it is fixable...
And if it is more work than I can get into, it will be for sale....cheap....

Post a video of it running, impossible to guess without at least hearing it.

Dealer is not blowing you off, anytime an engine is knocking any dealer for any make would tell you it needs a new engine.
