It's not an extra socket.. it's an unused hole in the 3-pin connector plugging into your tail light bulb's socket/holder. If you look at the wiring for the fender-mounted tail light, it has three wires going to it.. you're literally wiring your trunk/hatch-mounted thail light the same way (ignoring the blinker & reverse lights). If somebody hasn't already done so, I can take a picture of mine tomorrow in daylight.
