So, im having 4 ignition coils replaced, and spark plugs, and lots of leaks in my valve covers, seals, gaskets whatnot replaced, for $1,250 (too much?)

and they said, this wasn't a crucial problem, but they noticed a leak in my oil pan gasket, and said it would cost $250+Tax to replace that.

Ive read SOME about oil pan gaskets in the forums, and all i found was that the leak would just make the car smell. Is that the only problem to an oil pan gasket leak??? Will this cause problems later in the future, like my misfires did?

IF the leak is small enough, how small is small of a leak?

and how big is a big leak?

and how big should the leak be, if i need to replace it?

Thanks.!

It depends a lot on 1) how bad the leak is and 2) how much it bothers you.

If it's a fast enough leak that you run low on oil between oil changes, yes..it's a problem. If it drips oil on the city streets, it's a problem. If it's a slow leak, you have to decide for yourself if you can live with a wet, dirty oilpan.

are you sure it is only the oil pan gasket or the oil pan would be ruster out?
a rusted oil pan is a common issue in mazda's and I highly suggest you take care of it,
a small hole can quickly grow in size before you can realize it and bust your engine.

also at the price he gave you, it sounds like he is changing the oil pan with the gasket (this was the price given to me when I did it on my GF Protege5)

oil leaks is not something you want to take chances with

While severity counts, leaks are not good. They also only get worse with time and extremes (hot and cold) exasperate them. If you are not oppossed to additives, you can try something like BG RF7. It may or may not help and it would have to added every time the oil is changed. Eventually you will have to fix it. For $250 I'd fix it and be left with one less worry on your car.
