So im running 225/45/17 Pilot sport tires, they ar great but 2 of them are really really worn and the other two are prolly like 35-40% life left. so im going to need tires soon, i want to buy some falken 225s or some bridgestones, or yokos, but i was on my prelude forum and i found just a steal of a deal
215/45/17 Wynstar Ecotec tires (wynstar is like the Scion of Toyota, for Michellen. he wanted 300 for them and i got him down to 195 for ALL FOUR!, they are new he put them on his car and decided to go with a wider tire so he took them right back off. they are 300 tread wear and A and A traction and heat ratings. So they are decent tires, not as good as what i wanted not even close but they are just a hell of a deal and if i buy these cheap ones ill be able to buy my carbon fiber hood or cpe intake that much sooner.
Soooooo my question is am i really gonna hate goin from a 225 to a 215? should i do it or not?

those have a lower profile. I was comparing my 215/50/17 with my friends RSX's which was 215/45/17. It was noticeably a lower profile. Check out tire calculator to check out the exact measurements.

17" (original equipment wheel is 17x7)

215/50R17 6.0"-7.5" 32 psi (93+ load index), 33 psi (91 load index) *original equipment size*
225/45R17 7.0"-8.5" 35 psi
225/50R17 6.0"-8.0" 32 psi
235/45R17 7.5"-9.0" 32 psi
245/45R17 7.5"-9.0" 32 psi[/b]
Not listed on the sticky...therefore that size it's not recommended (insufficient load rating).

Wrong, the 45 represents a % of the witdth of a tire, thus a 295/45 has a larger side wall than a 195/45

ya, ya..but you were going to go with a 215/45/17...not a 225/45/17. if you are running a 215 tire, the recommendation is that u run a 50 series in terms of profile. your friend's rsx should have a lower profile than yours but a 225/45/17 should be more comparable to the 215/50/17 profile.

What is the load rating on the 215/45s? On the 6s, Mazda fits a 93 load index tire, and recommends running it at 32 psi. You do not want to run less than a 91 load rating on the Mazda6, and if you run 91 load rating tires, you are better off running them at 35 psi than Mazda's recommended 32 psi.

The 225/45s you run now are already a bit smaller in diameter (effectively giving you lower gear ratios) than the 215/50 stock tires. As other posters point out, going to a 215/45 will make the tire diameter even smaller.

Oh wow...so you guys really don't think i should get them?
I do have the new tires that are on the stock wheels but those are 215/50/17 and i think the 50 would look too big and ugly on the rims i have now...

i still think im going to buy the 215/45/17 wynstars. its a steal of a deal, and i don't see how i would run into any problems....

eh im so confused on what to do. I guess i could just take the 215/50/17 tires off the stock wheels and put them on my wheels and hope it doens't look too dumb. and then when they wear out ill buy the 225s i want...

Dude,
How much clearer can it be that this is a bad choice??? Many folks have told you what the problems are. The Tire is too short and you will have a speedometer error of 3.3% which is way too much. Here it is in numbers

Stock tire 215/50 - 17 Diameter 25.5 inches Sidewall is 4.2 inches 792 revs/mile

Your current tire 225/45 - 17 Diameter 25.0 inches Sidewall 4.0 inches 808 revs/mile 1.9% too fast

Wynstar 215/45 - 17 Diameter 24.6 inches Sidewall 3.8 inches 819 revs/mile 3.3% too fast
If you don't believe me, use the tire calculator on http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html

Now here's the real problem, these tires only have an 87W load rating. The minimum as stated correctly by posttosh is 91. You are looking for disaster if you put these on your 6.

http://www.tiredlr.com/shop.php?getDetails...amp;tireID=1042 <---Load rating website

Let these tires go. There are many many brands that are better choices in both size and performance than Wynstars.

My personal choice is currently Kumho SPT's in the stock 215/50-17 and they are awesome. Great price and very nice performance. They are not the only good choice though. Good Luck!

I won't rehash what has been stated....OK, maybe I will.

#1...Load rating. Not high enough. You're asking for problems.

#2...215/50 = your sidewall is 50% of 215mm
215/45 = your sidewall is 45% of 215mm
So, it is a lower profile, and even more susceptile to problems with potholes, etc IN ADDITION to the load issue.

Definitley do NOT do it
