I'd start by carefully checking the shifter and cable connections at both ends for worn bushings or any slop. If all is tight - the problem is likely in the tranny.
Often times it will stay in gear if you are accelerating and pop out when you let off the gas (decelerating). Sometimes it is the other way around. You should check this. This happens because the gears are skew cut and accelerating tends to force them in one direction while decelerating tends to force them the opposite way. If this is the case, the carrier shaft that the gear rides on is likely worn. You are better off replacing the tranny than trying to rebuild. If it won't go into gear, or it seems to go part-way in and won't stay - it could be a worn shift fork. Again, probably better off replacing the tranny than trying to rebuild. Good luck.
