Hey guys, I am considering a LW flywheel when I replace the clutch. I am leaning towards the 8lb. vs. the 16.5 lbs.

Are there any adverse affects with replacing it. I know the revs will drop quicked, and car will decelerate quicker, but what about engine longevity?

What I've gathered through research is that a lighter flywheel has no harmful effects on your engine. Your car will accel/decel more rapidly while in gear. As you said yourself, the main drawbck is fast-changing RPM. There will also be a higher tendency to stall in 1st gear. For those you just need to make some slight improvements in your shifting skill.

Another thing I heard is if your flywheel is excessively light that your car may have some idling issues. I've never heard of anyone here having that problem though. Even with the 8-pounder.

I got my mate to lighten and balance my last cars flywheel on a lathe with no downside at all ,I will be doing the 6 when it needs a clutch. Also if you lighten it too much i have heard of a flywheel shattering under stress.

I have the 16 pounder (actually more like 14.5 when you put it on a scale... go figure) and it works great. Takes a little practice to get used to but I don't know if that's due more to having a new clutch than the flywheel. Very happy with it but I may get the 8 pounder someday too...
