Got hit while parked

The thread title says it all.

Woke up Sunday morning to my door bell. An 87 yr old man in a 1977 Chevy Caprice hit my parked car. I live in SLC and we've had a bad winter but the roads were clear albeit a little narrow on my street.

If you're wondering how it happened, my car was parked on the street towards the west. The other guy was going east, crossed the opposite lane of traffic (going west) and hit my car.

The other damage not seen very easily in the photos is to the wheel/tire. Tire got punctured in the sidewall and the rim got a nasty gash. Subsequently, insurance is paying for a new rim and tire, and I'm paying for 3 new tires and new wheel paint so all 4 wheels match. I did the previous paint job on the wheels using rattle cans but now I'll go with powder coat at an extra cost.

Damages done including labor and paint: $4K
Out of pocket expenses for wheels/tires: Close to another $1K

Good news: No one got hurt. The 87 yr old driver's son came while the police were writing up the report. The son told me the family has tried to keep their dad from driving. Hopefully this will be a wake-up call. I'd rather deal with this and keep those who shouldn't be driving away from the steering wheel than have them be in a worse accident with severe injuries.

New fender, Maybe the bumper gets remolded, spot painted and a new clear coat.

Doors can be spot treated.

Sucks for resale. I had a similar thing happen to my rear.

It won't effect the resale, much , if at all. My wife's mother got into an accident with her Elantra (rear ended and hit the car in front of her on the interstate) no structural damage, and a year later she traded it at $300 over Edmonds value.

Accidents don't devalue cars as much as people think.

looks like it will buff out

I'm sorry, that really sucks this ^ is true tho. It only REALLY affects it if you have frame damage. I just bought my neon that hit a deer and had airbags deploy and all that jazz... really didn't affect the value at all.

The insurance adjuster quoted a new bumper cover, fender, wheel, front door skin, rear-view mirror, and a lot of hammering and paint (the whole side will be painted).

As a "bonus" the old bumper cover was scratched (probably rubbed it on a concrete pylon) and spot painted with regular red paint so that gets fixed. I had another spot where tree sap ate through the paint which also gets "fixed".

I'm still impressed the old guy who hit it came to my door to tell me. You don't hear about that very often.
