I remember when we were diagnosing ours, theres a way to check to VVT actuator. Put a wrench on the camshaft and rotate it towards the rear of the car, then back forward. And it should turn within a certain amount of movement. (something to that effect).

My goal in the new year will be to get this work done under warranty. I'm glad it worked out for you guys.

The interesting thing is that both Ti and myself had the chain hitting the VC, not a bad VVT per-say. That is why the noise was so slight.

So, for those of you in the future: pull your VC if the dealer is an idiot, see if the chain looks like these pics, and see if your vc has scoring in it. If so, rest assured you will be covered under the Mazda warranty if the dealer says they have to pull the VC to ensure warranty will cover it.

Also, as long as there is no sludge in the VC you are fine without an oil change receipts (unless you have them handy I guess)

no new gasket needed.

Pay attention when reinstalling the vc that the gasket is where you want it so you don't pinch it...

Ok cool. The dealer had it all apart probably 10k or so ago, so wont find any surprises. Ugh, I hate letting them work on it!

Gonna pull the VC on the morning. I have a really slight rattle, not nearly as bad as some i've heard, and honestly may not be VVT related at all. The dealer didn't think so at least . . .

I'll post up some pictures after and get some opinions from those wiser than myself. I'm at 68500 miles, so it's my last chance to get it covered.
