2014 Mazda6 vs 2014 Mazda3

The 2014 Mazda3 comes out next month and they rated the SkyActive at 41mpg highway. The 3 is of course priced a lot lower than the 6. It's a smaller car which helps with MPG but you lose the interior space.

What advantages does the Mazda6 have over the Mazda3?

Besides it being a larger vehicle? Not much, apparently. Reading the spec sheets so far tells me that both vehicles are offered with the same options. The only glaring difference to me is that the 3 is offered in a 5-door, unlike the 6.

Honestly, I think the 3 is just a 6 that's been left in the dryer too long...

Haha perfect.

That, and someone ruined the integration of the dash with that silly "floating" navigation - Someone posted pics of the other manufacturers doing that and it just looks so dumb to me.

It screams "HEY LOOK I found a place to put this thing" instead of "we took time and effort to integrate this so it looked elegant and flowed with the car."

But that's my opinion

My opinion as well. This & the new MB CLA have it like that & I don't care for it. Much rather have it in the dash, not stuck on top.

I kinda like how Mazda is now back to making their cars look somewhat similar to each other. 2nd gen 6 and 3 looked like cousins to each other.

As for the 3rd gens I feel like it comes down to preference. I'd say get the 6 if you plan on having passengers and you want them to sit comfortably. I've said this before and I'll say it again, the 6 has become more of a " fun-family sedan" compared to the 1st gen "sports-sedan" was all have learned to love.

I would say the 3 will be a great choice for someone who wants something smaller. Probably doesn't care how their rear-passengers feel . Personally I would wait for the Speed3 because racecar.

All in all they all look great and probably will run very similarly. Of course this is just my opinion and most likely will not matter to anyone.

I do agree that the navigation/info screen seems like an aftermarket add-on because of how it looks. Only redeeming factor is that it is 7" in size vs. the 5.8" of the Mazda6. Other than that, the Mazda6 has a better integrated navigation/info screen.

  • 2014 Mazda 6 Touring - $24,700 (auto)
  • 2014 Mazda3 i Touring sedan – $20,650 (auto)
  • 2014 Mazda3 s Touring sedan -$24,600 (auto)
The 2.0L mileage is awesome at an EPA rated 41mpg highway, which means some easy throttle driving will give real world results around 44mpg or 45mpg highway. The EPA is usually around 3-4mpg LESS than real world light driving numbers.

The technology package is another $1,600 on the iTouring model.

One negative in my view with the Mazda3 is that it supposedly is being built in Mexico vs. Japan (Mazda6).

The QC is better in Japan than Mexico and I fear the fit & finish of the Mexico built Mazda3 cars will be sub-par.

Mazda3 s Touring has more features than 6 Touring:

bi-xenon headlights with manual leveling, a piano black-finish front grille, halogen fog lights, LED combination taillights, LED daytime running lights, the all-new Active Driving Display, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and variable heated front seats.

So it's a matter of size vs. features.

The main thing I wonder is how the two compare in terms of performance and handling. If 3 beats 6 in those categories, I'd easily take the 3 hatchback over 6 and pay $400 more, and let my kids suffer on the knee room.

Not sure about the '14, but btw the 6 and the 2013 3, there's enough difference that no adult could comfortably get in/out or sit behind me when I'm driving (I'm 6'1") the 3. The 6 wasn't a problem.

The changes to the '14 may have alleviated that...

On-line it shows:

2014 Mazda6 Touring:

Front leg room = 42.2"
Rear leg room = 38.7"
Rear hip room = 56.1"
Curb Weight = 3,230 lbs (auto - 2.5L)
Drag Coefficient = 0.27 Cd

2014 Mazda3 i Touring:

Front leg room = 42.2"
Rear leg room = 35.8"
Rear hip room = 53.8"
Curb weight = 2,860 lbs (auto - 2.0L)
Drag Coefficient = 0.26 Cd

So just under 3" less leg room in the rear. That doesn't seem like a lot but I don't know what the standard is. The front leg room is identical at 42.2"

What is striking is the weight difference. 370lbs between the two cars is significant. That is why the Mazda6 only comes with the 2.5L as the 2.0L would be underpowered for such a heavy car. If you get the 2.5L on the Mazda3 that adds another 122lbs or 2,982 lbs curb weight.

I believe that is the main reason why the Mazda3 gets the better mpg due to the weight of the vehicle and maybe due to a slightly better Cd. Less weight also means better handling, so I would think the Mazda3 should be a little quicker in the turns and acceleration.
