I'm going to pick up the dog I adopted from the shelter in a couple days. Its a 6-8month old German Shepherd / Lab mix. He's going to be transported in my 6hb.

What would you guys recommend be the best way to go about this with this car? I was wondering if I should make the backseats flat, or leave them up. Not sure what the most convinient/safe/comfortable way would be. Also, I do not know how this dog handles car rides.

I used to just throw a blanket down in the back seat with them up. If you can have the window down a little bit and the pooch should just sit near the open window trying to get it's head out. Don't put it all the way down until you know he won't jump. If he doesn't like riding in the car he should just lay down. Thanks for adopting! Dogs are great!

I used to fold the seats flat, place a towel over the back of them and bought the all-weather mat for the back (a VERY worthwhile purchase, imho).

Enjoy your new dog...they are awesome.

Be sure to lock the windows so he can't accidentally roll them down or up. Our dog always chills in the back seat with the seats up (sedan). But if you don't know how he will act you may want to fold the seats down with a blanket in case oopsies happen.

Will a kennel/crate not fit in the back? That would be the best option by far I think.

If you don't mind being killed by an unrestrained flying dog when you hit something, by all means let him travel on the rear seat. I've a wagon; my dogs travel in the trunk and a dog guard keeps them (and their muddy feet) there

I kept my dog in the back with the seats up. He'll plop down in the back happily, I'm sure.

I had a Shepard/Akita mix, but she never rode in my 6. She did ride in my PT Cruiser though. She went NUTS in the car!

I can tell you from experience, the dog will more than likely not stay in the cargo area. Put the seats down. Also put some towels back there to keep it from making a mess. Dogs sometimes pee when they get excited.

I don't think a dog crate will fit it in the back of the 6, assembled. It did in my PT, but probably not in the 6.

I took the dog home this afternoon. Luckily for me, everything went smoothly. Before I introduced the dog to my car, I took him for a long walk first. Then when it was time to get in the car, as soon as I opened the door he jumped in. I had my rear seats folded down, and he just laid on top of the towels the entire trip. He ended up falling asleep on the 40min drive. Not bad!
