I have heard about this for a while and know that race cars do it. But keep in mind those racing tires are made of totally different materials than our DOT approved ones we use on our cars (at least I hope all of you are ).

Last week one of my buds got her tires filled with nitro and she claimed it does make a difference but I said it's all in her mind She has Yoko's Avid 255/45-17 all around.

Your take on this?

Well I just got new tires put on my dads car for him while he was at work and had my 6. And discount tire put nitrogen in the Michelins. From what I understand Nitrogen reacts less to heat than air so you supposedly have less pressure variation. Nissan started this whole trend with the GT-R if I'm right.

True. How much of a difference in variation still varies depending on your source.

IMO, if the Nitrogen is free, I'll do it. If it costs $$$, I pass.

It looks like it only works for temperature extremes. There have been many threads on it already, and people in Alaska think it helps...
for the rest of us, we don't get our tires that hot from normal driving on highways, not even close lol

EDIT: oh and unless you have 2 valve stems, you arn't getting only nitrogen in there, ambiant air will still exist in the tire. Also our air is over 70% nitrogen (give or take) and I'm not sure how much more you will really get in there from doing that...it would be minimal gains, like having 85% nitrogen or 90 if you are lucky.

2 friends....one with a Vette, the other with a G35 swear that they no longer have to periodically stop somewhere for an air 'top off' since they switched to nitrogen. For cars with extremely small aspect ratio tires, even a small temperature-enduced contraction could make a difference when the weather turns cold and triggers the TPMS.

Then there are people like me who keep an air tank filled and ready in the garage for when the weather turns cold. Tires always topped off, end of story. Perhaps Nitrogen is a reasonable investment if you're not likely to pay much attention to your tires or God forbid, check the pressure yourself.

haha!
Yup I have a 30 gallon compressor sitting there for me, was thinking of getting a 5 gallon tank for my trunk for emergencies in the winter. I haven't ever used nitrogen but it just seems like the effect would almost have to be imagined. btw 6>vette :P

I have had my tires filled with Nitro for a year now. I have had no complaints or real pressure variances.

You've had your tires filled with Nitro for a year? What's it like driving with a liquid in your tires? Better keeps flames away from them too!

Been a busy poster lately huh?
