I was wondering you anybody had any tips to share when shifting with the auto-manual (automatic tranny with manual mode). I have a 6s with ATX.

In particular, do you still take your foot off the gas when you upshift and downshift?

Is there any harm in downshifting with your foot on the brake?

Thanks. Any tips would be helpful, so i can be assured i'm not causing any harm to my sweet new ride.

I don't think there is a correct way. I do knoe that the fuel is cut off in between shift to help keep everything in sync and smooth. I kinda help the situation when in manny mode and lift the gas pedal a little but not completly between shifts. Does this help, IMO ya. Is it correct, who knows?
I actually don't like the way the car sounds or feels when in many mode and you keep your foot planted on the gas.

Damn atom you read my mind, thats exactly how i use mine as well, it sounds and feels better imo when u lift off a little.

As far as downshifting with your foot on the brake, you should do that when your comming to a stop, that way your not in say 4th gear, at 15-20mph and need to start going again, you can be in the right gear to start zoom'n once more

I'm driving a loaner 6i ATX right now. Boy, it's weird when I play around with the manual ATX mode. I'm not used to it so I just leave it at the fully auto mode.

There are some tricks to know about on the ATX that can help things. I've found that letting it downshift while stopping works much better than manually doing it. If you are in a high gear and going slow enough, you can force it downshift on it's own if you give it enough gas but it will ONLY go down one gear. When I drive, I don't lift off the gas and in first gear I try to pull the shifter at about 5500 RPM. This causes it to shift somewhat near the rev limiter due to the delay in shifting.

While in manual mode and I come to a stop slowly, sometimes it will stay in 2nd gear and never shift into 1st. In auto mode, it works normally. Anybody else notice this? Oh, and this isn't only happening on hills or anything.

So is using the manual mode to engine brake bad for the car?

Any time you use the brakes or transmission to slow the car you're turning your motion energy into heat energy. That's why the brakes get hot or in your case the transmission fluid. An automatic is effected more than a manual because of the torque converter. I wouldn't do it on really hot days when the trans is being taxed already.

Don't know about everyone else but I just cruise down from 2nd to first. It always downshifts to 1st by itself. I noticed that when in manny mode 1st revs pretty high when down shifting and causes a jolt, even at pretty slow speeds. So if I'm coming to a complete stop I just don't do anything and it goes to first by itself, much smoother then trying to do it yourself. I think I've even come to a complete stop in higher gears at a quicker pace without doing anything and it automatically shifts down to first on it's own too.

Since not toooooo many folks let off the gas when the trqnsmission shifts in automatic shift . Why would let off the gas when shifting the automatic manually?

I would think anytime you shift the auto transmission manually you might be building up more heat in the tranny. Heat kills auto transmissions.

My 6 wagon even in the manual always shifts back to 1st. I just returned from a quick spin in a 6 S and it also did it, almost everytime. But shifting to 5th. on the highway sometimes caused the tranny to shift back to 2nd during a slow roll. But while traveling slow around the lot in manual, it always shifted back to 1st.
