Default airbags break windshield?

is that common because car hit me yesterday and the damage wasnt actually that bad but it was a suv so it hit the sports grille area of the car where sensor is and the bags popped and the passenger side broke the windshield... is it supposed to do that???

I'd say no, it's not supposed to break the windshield.... I cant answer that question for sure but I'm assuming that as long as that thing deploys then it did it's job... who cares about the windshield when your forehead is flying forward forward?

Air bags seem to break just about everything. Not sure they are supposed to, but they do. HEHE Glad your ok, hope your car is fixed fast. I hate insurance companies from having been in 3 wrecks, non of which where my fault.

That sucks. However, it is pretty common for the passenger-side airbag to break the windshield. It is actually the dashboard airbag cover that does the damage. It is hinged on the forward side of the cover and hits the windshield when it swings up and away from the passenger. I've seen this on many different cars.

Airbags have only one purpose: to save lives. And that they do... better the airbag hitting the windshield than somebody's heat!

The airbag uses the windshield as a "backstop" the passenger bag actually deploys into it.

Yes it is common in every car I've crashed in =)
When I was a passenger in an accident, the whole pass. side of the windshield was cracked badly. Even the Florida trooper investigating the accident thought I wasn't wearing my seatbelt - it looked like my head went into it.

Yeah it sucks... But until 2-stage airbags become more common they will always deploy as soon as the sensor goes off, no matter what speed you are going.
