Brain Games!

I tuned into brain games on natgeo because I'm fascinated by this stuff. I learned something that I thought was pretty neat and thought I'd share. Humans can't multitask at all, so according to my TV: driving while on the phone is the same as driving with a 0.08% alcohol level. And texting is double. I did not at all put it to be like that at all. It doesn't seem like being on a call REALLY distracts you, but apparently it does.

Like I said, I thought it was neat, so I decided to share

Interesting.

I wonder what thier definition of multitasking is...

If talking on the phone is multitasking is singing?

So does that mean when @corey6 is rocking out singing call me maybe, driving down the street, drinking a 6 pack, and smoking a cigarette. Its like hes driving at a 0.24?

It has to do with your attention. If you are trying to comprehend what the idiot on the other line is saying, then it detracts from the attention required to comprehend what the idiot in the other lane is doing.. lowering your reaction time as well.
Texting is worse because, on top of this ^^^ you are also frequently taking your eyes off the road as well as thinking about how to spell big words like "idiot".

They had some guy do a test with it, he was talking on the phone, and they kept throwing beach balls in front of his car. Almost every time he had to stop talking in order to dodge the ball. They also had a driving simulator and had him do math problems and memorize words at the same time. He failed that horribly.

Did they? I saw the one where driving when you have to go to the bathroom impairs your ability to drive. And they were saying that even WITH a bluetooth it still distracts you quite a bit, which I didn't realize.

Because what I said earlier, basically.

Human brain cannot consciously multitask.. it just switches it's attention to something else in rapid succession (for those who are good at it, anyway).. but can only devote conscious attention to one task at once. A lot like smartphones "multitask".. In most cases, they "pause" the app when it is the background, instead of using processing time on everything that is still open.
Sub-conscious is a different story.
