Has anyone had the lid on the compartment on top of the dash break? Mine broke a few weeks ago. The hinge on the right side broke off so now it looks at jacked up and half open. Plus, if I hit a bump hard enough the damn thing pops open completely. Kind of annoying really. I was wondering if anyone had this happen and what they did to fix it. Or mod it.

Thanks

Just curious if you ever found a solution to this, I have the same problem and haven't had any luck finding the part online anywhere...

Some of those lids were made with artificial plastic. Mazda later rectified the problem and made the lids in genuine nearly-almost-real plastic.

P.S. Now you know why no one buys their cars (though, in all fairness, this could happen to a Subaru, Hyundai or Kia too--though people are buying those cars...).

Anyone know the trick to pulling it out? I figured if I removed it I could try to fix it and save the ridiculous amount of money it costs to replace. Seems stuck in the corners pretty hard, and I didn't want to break anything.

1. remove center console cupholder assy- just pulls- no tools
2. remove ashtray assy- also pulls out -no tools
3. remove radio assy/faceplate- you will see 2 screws after removing ashtray. ther is also a hidden screw that you must get out through the glovebox opening. be careful not to cut yourself on the sharp edges of thedash when getting to this screw. with 3 screws removed -GENTLY pry out on radio/faceplate assy. the whole center panel of dash will come out with the radio. do not bend or twist too much or you can break the circuit board.
4. once you are at this point- you will see the screws that hold the upper dash storage compt.

hope this helps,

Sweet, thanks a lot. I was hoping it would be one of the parts that just popped out, but it helps knowing the specifics like this. I'll give it a shot.

So did you run into any additional issues? Mine just broke and I am using this thread to fix it. Got my part ordered and hope to see it shipped sometime soon. I was just wondering if there were any problems you had encountered I could learn from on top of the info you were given.
