OK, new hu wired up. Much more of a project than I expected. I put it in my top box but the cut was a little to big. I decided to fiberglass the box, then bondo and paint it.
Waiting for some clearcoat to dry right now. Then its just running wires. May get it in tonight, if not tmrow. Will post pics ASAP.

I'm curious to see how this turns out. I'd have to say it'd better be great to completely cover the center console (vents and everything), plus I'd be REAL concerned about theft. You'll see that thing a mile away.

Finally. Took me about 2 weeks, mostly because of all the painting involved. This is the first time doing anything like this. Never done anything more than wiring up a radio. The LCD doesn't work because I couldn't get the plug into the stock radio. I hooked up the new hu to the wires from the stock radio and they just weren't long enough. Doesn't bother me, can easily be fixed if I ever want to. Can't wait to see how it looks at night all light up.
Heres the final product:

And heres some of the process:

fiberglassing-

(IMG:http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/1/web/553000-553999/553509_51_full.jpg)

bondo-
(IMG:http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/1/web/553000-553999/553509_53_full.jpg)

safety first-
(IMG:http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/1/web/553000-553999/553509_52_full.jpg)

finished-

And for all the alarm concerns I do have a stock alaram. My windows are 20%, so someone will really have to be working. The monitor itself is just screwed into the tape slot, it can be ripped out, but its pretty secure:
(IMG:http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/1/web/553000-553999/553509_59_full.jpg)

And if someone decides to front I also have a concealed weapon permit. On me most of the time. My piece:

I give it a month or so before your new HU AND screen are ripped out and selling on ebay. Stock alarm?? Please! A lot of good that piece will do ya (very nice by the way, I myself have twin glocks with laser scopes as well :D ) when you asleep, at a club dinner or wherever. All a thief needs is 10 seconds and it's gone!

Top not that great, but pretty good for a first attempt. Will be redone in time.

If someone is going to rob me, they will. Nothing I can do about it. Lot of people stressing the theft factor. First off I live in wilmingotn, nc a small coastal town. Theft isn't much of a concern here. Second consider that my whole setup cost 400 bucks, less than a lot of people spend on just a head unit.

Driving today I can look at the road and still see whats on tv. Safer driving with this than a tiny 7 where you have to concentrate to see whats on. Loving it, tried to take night pics, but not coming out clear. Take my word though, not anything hotter.

:loser:
Motion to nominate as dumbest two sentences on Mazda6Club.

Yeah having a blaring computer screen mounted on your dash sure is a lot safer than a smaller 7" screen. Why car manufacturers havent realized this is beyond me. Manufacturers should toss the "tiny" screens they use for nav... they're an obvious safety hazard to the driver and dont emmit enough light in your face during night driving. To add a little extra layer of safety, they should start using gigantic 14" screens on the front dash instead. no wait, to hell with that. put 42" plasmas up front

Afterall, when your driving you want to try to concentrate on the road AND still see whats playing on TV (gotta be safe!).. A nice proportionate 6-8" TV just wont cut it.

Sorry of a I sound like a jerk or like im hating (cuz im not), but there aint shit safe about that

nice, i agree with the need for more sanding for the housing for the HU. But it is quite impressive and while some people would say it's kinda stupid to put an oversized screen up there, I would say it's rather creative (to the point of eccentric). Oh well, impressive to see that size screen even stay up there.

Screen is too big, IMHO. For me it would interfere with steering, shifting, HVAC, and my right leg probably. It throws everything way out of proportion and looks rigged, like it doesn't belong there. But, if you like it, more power to you. :slap:
