I believe we have sold this kit to customers in CA before. I will check with Josh when he returns from SEMA on Monday and let you know.

looking forward to the update on whether if there were any smog cert problems w/ this set on. I may have to drop out if not certified. (yeah i don't want to driving around w/ a stupid number posted on my rear window).

I talked to a few smog shops in the Temecula area. They do inspect aftermarket parts as a part of the visual inspection process, and I would have to provide CARB (California Air Resource Board) EO (Executive Order) #s for any after market bolt ons to verify CA legality. I don't see any way around this. The headers aren't an internal or covert part; they are clearly visible and unmistakably not stock. I don't have smog shop hookups.

As a result, unless you have any more info Paula, I will have to unfortunately pull out of the GB.

Might be a long shot but I figured I would ask. I'm running an 05 Escape 3.0L V6 in my 98 Contour SVT and looking for a nice set of longtube headers to start my dual exhaust project. From the pictures I've seen, looks like the front header will fit perfectly. I'm a bit more concerned about the rear one though as I think space is a bit more limited on the Contour vs the Mazda 6. Does the manufacturer have any experience with the Contour platform ? Would a headers only purchase qualify me as the 10th participant of that group buy ?

Thanks for any additional information you guys might provide !

Alex

These will not fit your setup.

We have sold this setup to customers in CA before. But we do not know how they worked out the carb cert issues. I apologize, I wish I had more information.

I wanted to provide a little more info to anyone in Cali. This is kind of a bummer, but it is hard enough in Cali as it is without dealing with non authorized parts.

I was on the ca.arb.gov website (California's Air Resource Board)- (http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/replace.htm

And read the following-

QUOTE
Catalytic Converter Equipped Vehicles

Headers for use on catalytic converter equipped vehicles require an Executive Order to be legal for street use.

So, the CP-E headers are basically illegal without an EO. Is there anything I could do to help this process? I would be willing to volunteer my car for any testing needed. It looks like to get the EO#, you just have to submit an application and provide some information that is probably readily available (form http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/forms/forma.doc)

Basically, if there is anything I can do to assist with you getting a CARB EO number on this header set, I will do it.

Bump!

I want these hedurzzzz.

edit: BTW.... QQ: If I get the welded-in wideband 02 bung and cap, that would enable me to add a wideband in the future, correct (ie the cap is removable to add the wideband sensor)? Just want to make sure I'm understanding the 'cap' concept properly.

The testing for CARB legality is long and expensive. Look at the number of parts available that aren't CARB exempt, don't you think those manufacturers would love to legally get into this market? It takes a commitment from the manufacturer to get it done, simply from cost stand-point. It's an investment. I'd love to install a kick-ass set of headers, but can't be taking them off every two years to smog the car.

Also, those with "smog shop hook-ups" better watch their step. If somebody gets pulled over, it's not uncommon to find out where the car got smogged if it's carrying illegal parts. Johny Ricer needs his whip to get to work, and under state law impounding is a very real possibility with non-CARB parts. So guess how long he'll wait to rat out his "hook-up" anonymously so that he can keep his car? Smog shops that are caught cheating face HEAVY fines and serious jail time.

Yes the cap is removable for future use of a wideband.

I will do some more research on this when I have a moment.

Good info, Sac6! I didn't know the cops would try to get people to snich on the shop that smogged their ride... just makes me even more scared to put any non CARB parts on my car.
