Rx-9 Approved by Mazda Board for 2020

I know that this is a 6 forum, but it looks like Mazda just approved the RX-9

Mazda RX-9 locked in - motoring.com.au

Bringing a new car to market is resource intensive (money, engineering talent, factory space, marketing, supply base, etc). Given Mazda's small size this probably rules out any real major product changes or introductions until after 2020. So, incremental SKYACTIVE 2 roll outs and (hopefully for the 6), limited exterior styling changes on the next gen.

Those of you hoping for a Speed6 will have to wait until 2022 at the earliest, if it even happens.

On a side note, 80k USD is a lot of money for an RX...

The original Japanese article mentions that the dual rotary single turbo engine will be tuned for torque response and not max HP. Sounds like they are carrying over what they did with the new CX-9. Might be a sign of things to come for other models too.

Looks like they took a 6 and penciled out the front doors and put the windshield in front of the back seat.

Not a fan and after the very underwhelming RX8 I hope they get it right.

Those are renderings from the Japanese Auto site based on verbal info they were able to gleam from Mazda, so take them with a grain of salt.

That said, for $80k USD for a 2 seater, it better have a bunch of performance. They are in Corvette and Porsche price range. The Japanese site claims they want to use the RX-9 as the new flagship to reposition the brand on their 100th anniversary in January 2020. They claim marketing people told them they will use top grade materials to justify the price point. And that they want to completely disassociate it from the RX 8

That said, it means nothing without performance in that segment. They're claiming 394 HP...

300kW = 402HP (roughly)
At current rates, $100,000AUD = $77,000USD
Therefore, that's around $192/HP

Not much bang for the buck there. Wouldn't be surprised if that dollar figure is high. If it's not, could be a tough sell.

If it comes in under 400HP it will be a big swing and a miss. I want to like it, and I want to believe but we have heard big rotary promises before.....

Not sure if raw HP is how we should look at it. They've stated that they are aiming for under 1300kg (2860 lbs), going for a wide torque curve, and handling in curves with an even weight distribution.

If you want straight line power or max HP, you'll have to look elsewhere (not that with a wide torque curve light weight car won't get off the line). Now, if you want something that can take turns and have a Super GT300 pedigree (and 80k) burning a while in your pocket...

Civic Type R will be here in 2018 with a price tag of around $40k. The Focus RS is already here and depending on whom you ask, can be had for <$45k. The MK8 Golf R will be introduced in 2018/2019, so Mazda will have its work cut out selling the RX9 at over $80k. At that price, we are talking Porsche 911,Jag F-type and BMW M4/M5 money. Best is to introduce the MazdaSpeed3 and price it on par with Focus RS and Type R.

Pricepoint is very very confusing. I agree that they are pricing it in an area where there are cars that have had decades of R&D. Whole car makes no sense. Exactly when did they manage to get a rotary engine to pass the extremely strict emissions requirements?

If anything, put out a 500HP AWD 6. Shouldn't be that hard considering how much they are making out of V6 engines in Detroit. Would likely sell well in today's market too.

The rotary engine is part of Mazda's DNA, part of their corporate identity. And the rotary is an exotic engine. Having them release a "vanilla" V6 as their Halo model doesn't really single them out. Especially if they're looking to drive the brand up market or ask for more dollars.

As for the rendering, I like aspects of it but no doubt this is just a "guess". More likely the recent RX Vision concept is what their shooting for. IMO
