Ok just to add the growing list of things which are going wrong with my supposedly ‘reliable Japanese’ car, my secondary Key fob no longer works.

Here's the story:

Took my car in to the local dealer to get a recall done on the rear wheel arches. Gave them my spare keys (which have not been used for over a year). Left in my comedy courtesy car. Got rang about 10 minutes later and told over the phone that the fob nolonger works. Excellent

Apparently this is a £100+ cost for a new one, which leaves me the following questions:

1. How can a fob, which has pretty much never been used (it looks mint), suddenly stop working?
2. They look like they are made from Lego - why are they so expensive?
3. How can I get this fixed without selling a Kidney?

Grateful for any help, searched the forums but couldn’t find anything helpful.

N.B. Posted here because I think the US fobs are different to ours - and wouldn’t want to start off with the confusion caused by putting it on the main board. Let me know if this is not the case and i'll move it.

Ok I’ve an update and a nice happy solution

Having thought that there was something odd about my mint condition fob not working I did a little digging on the subject of reprogramming new fobs. Anyhow I found, and followed, the instructions here and have I’ve now managed to fix the problem!

Evidently our fobs 'time out' when they've not been used for long, and need to be bought back from the dead by a fairly simple, yet strange reprogramming sequence. My point here is that when asked Mazda said I would need a new fob at a cost of £100+, the moral of the story is don't always trust the dealers...but I suppose that’s obvious really.

Follow the link. I used the method given in the 4th post down. Note that my 6 is an 03, don’t know if it works with the newer models.
