Hi all

I have a brand new Mazda 6 which I've owned since August 2004 and so far I've been very pleased with it. However for approx 3 weeks last month it was producing LARGE amounts of smoke under acceleration and even some smoke when idling. It didn't matter whether the engine was cool or hot, it's the same. I've previously owned a Peugeot 306 TD and a Seat Leon TDI and only the 306 has been remotely as smoky. There was no engine warning light lit by the way. The economy averages between 42 - 45 mpg before the smoking and 35mpg while smoking.

At least once a week I did done some "Italian driving" on the M1 near to me to get rid of excess carbon build up. I could discourage tailgaters with one sharp push on the accelerator and leave them covered in a plume of smoke

I've used Millers diesel power plus from approx 1,000 miles (now on 6,000) so I would have thought this would reduce smoking. I took it to the dealer and it appeared that the turbo seals had gone, so it was a new turbo.

In the end it took two weeks to repair as they had sheared off the studs when replacing the turbo and new studs had to be ordered.

I thought Mazda's were supposed to be reliable.

That's why I bought one. However, my experience has been tainted by this incident. I've previously owned a Peugeot 306 TD which did 95,000 miles before I sold it with a still intact turbo and a Seat Leon TDI which also had an ok turbo at 15,000 miles when sold.

I'm hoping that nothing else will go wrong otherwise I will have to conclude that Mazda reliability is all hype.

Yes, the dealer replaced the turbo under warranty which was a good job because out of warranty it would have cost £800 plus labour

Worringly, the dealer also said the job would take either 2 hours or 4 hours for replacing the turbo depending whether the studs sheared off. (Which they did). So, mine isn't the only one this has happened to.

Back to Mazda reliability?

You are probably just unlucky. I've heard many good things about these diesel-engines, on the Mazda6.

Maybe it's still safer to buy a petrol-engine, no matter what car you buy. Hmm..

Yeah, I got one. I had problems with the hydraulic pump on mine and it got repaired under warranty. No problems with the turbo though. I got 50,000 kilometers on mine now (31,250 miles).
