I was cruising down the highway at 60, and shifted into manual mode....it read 6th gear, and the revs jumped a few hundred RPM....speed was unchanged....I put it back into auto mode, the revs went back to where they were....I repeated this about 4 times, same thing everytime...

If it stayed in 6th, why'd the RPM's jump up?

Think they all do that cause my CX-9 & Charger both do that when in stick mode

Sounds to me like the torque converter is unlocking when you switch to manual mode, but I have no idea why they would've programmed it to do that.

+1 they do it because in locked mode it can only hold on with so much torque and if you shift to M odds are it's for fun not economy (or so Mazda assumes).

+1 ... I observed the same behavior with the 5-speed on my 4cyl '09 as well. It seems that some times shifting it into manual will unlock the torque converter when in 5th, but other times it doesn't. I haven't been able to figure out a pattern as to when it decides to or not. One thing I did realize, though, is that if it does not unlock immediately, it will lock and unlock just like it would in automatic (i.e.: unlocks when climbing a hill, locks down again once cruising again on level ground). However, if it does decide to unlock automatically, it won't re-lock the torque converter until you put it back in full auto.

Any ideas as to why it does this??

does it hurt the transmission to go into manual mode? It doesn't seem that the tranny rev matches for us on the down shifts so it seems like it would hurt it IMO. any ideas?

+2

the lockup "clutch" inside the torque converter is just a little paper faced metal ring. It won't transmit much torque anyway. (unless you have a GM TH125 They have a tendency to lock up and stay locked up. When you stop the car, you kill the engine. Of course anything with a TH125 is pathetic at making power though)

When you slide over to the manual gate the computer just unlocks it.

If it doesn't do it when you select manual mode, then it wasn't locked up
