So I am coming up to 1,000 miles and my first oil change is on my mind. I put my car up on the ramps to check out what I'll be working with. I exclaimed a "Woo Hoo!" when I saw under my car.

Look at the deliciousness of the placement of the oil filter. No more contorting your body to manuever around the exhaust manifold and reach "way" up to the filter. Now the filter is right there! Nothing in the way at all. Mazda did at least one thing right on the exterior of the car. Hehe. I just thought I'd share that Mazda was definitely thinking in that respect.

I have to say I agree with the vulnerability. Is there no skid plate in the way to protect it?

From her 2nd picture, it doesn't look like the filter's sticking out that far, which is good. And anything big enough to do big-time damage to the filter is going to really fuck up the oil pan, anyway.

I like it! Looks like I'll be able to do my own oil changes again.

Can you get a pic of where the drain plug is? Also, is it possible to sneak under the car without ramps to reach both the filter and the plug?

PM'd for drain plug pic. I think the car is too low to get under without ramps. I didn't even try; I immediately put it up on the ramps. I can try crawling under the car later.
