I have a question, when I start up the car in the cold, (2005 V6 MTX) it makes this high pitched noise. It kind of sounds like it's metal to metal but I'm not sure. I wanted to see if it still did it when the engine was warm. So I took the car around the block two or three times, to make sure it was warm, and pulled into my drive way, and I turned her off, started her back up again, and the sounds was gone.

It seems that the sound comes bewteen the RPM range of 1500-2000 when starting up in the cold. But when the engine was warm it only went up to around 1400-1500 obviously. What could this be, anyone have any ideas, or had the same problem? If the problem persists I will be taking the car to the dealership since I only have 10,000 miles on it, but how would I be able to reproduce the noise since when I get to the dealership the engine will be warm?

It's the infamous 'cluch dust in the starter' sound. It starts when it gets cold, but eventually you'll have it everytime. It's "normal" in that virtually every single Mazda6s MTX will get it.

You can take it in, and they'll replace the starter, but you'll just get the sound again later on. There really isn't any measurable damage going on. I've had the sound for over 30,000 miles without the slightest problem.

Thanks for the info, would it hurt to get a new starter if i'm still under warrenty, I can live with the sound, even though it does sound pretty lame when I start up.. hah.

It won't hurt. But you'll get it again, and then you'll have to go through the process again. Eventually they might get tired of doing it for you. I had my dealership make a note that I have the problem now but I'm not having them fix it. I'm going to do mine before the warranty runs out and/or just before I sell the car.

Do you have an aftermarket intake? I believe my CP-E intake always makes that sound on startups when it's cold.. like a quick whirring noise when the car is first turned on.

Nope. Don't have any aftermarket parts on the engine. If this is "normal" than I may not worry about it until I just start getting really annoyed with the sound of it. Spring/Summer is coming around soon and I don't feel like having my car in the shop when it's nice and warm out all day.

awesome thread. This has to be what just started happening to my 6 , yesterday. And i came right here and didnt even have to search for it, let alone start my own thread.

Cold start, and i hear what sounds like a high pitched grinding noise that seems like it vibrates out of the clutch and lasts half a second.

I think our sound might be different. I think......

I will make a recording of the sound when I start my car in the morning just to verify this.

I've got the same problem. It's been doing it for 25,000 miles, about 2 years. The shrill gets annoying and i'll probably get the starter replaced just before warranty runs out just in case.
