So I did a search and found some similar problems but this one seems to combine all of them:

My rpms are randomly starting to bounce- the car will drive normally for a while then all of a sudden when driving slow enough to notice it (ie rpms low enough), the revs will start bouncing from ~1000 to about 1600 all by themselves. Even if I take my foot entirely off the gas, the car will sustain its speed and the revs will bounce.

Under braking, it lurches as if I'm still tapping the gas pedal simultaneously.

Things to note:
-When I knock it into neutral (it's a 4AT), the revs will rise to about 2000 and stay steady while car is moving.
-Once I've come to a complete stop (whether it be in N, D, or M), the idle level returns to normal.
-No CEL
-It started happening when the car was warm (half an hour into driving), temperature outside ~72 so it's not a cold issue.
-At high revs, the rpms don't bounce at all. Once you've reached a low enough level they start to.
-I've tried disconnecting the negative battery terminal and reconnecting after a half hour or so... it still does it.
-Can't find any vacuum leaks.

It's a 6i, 4AT, about 25K miles on it.

Been doin it all day - won't be able to get into the dealership till Monday.

Anyone?

I have the same issue. I posted about this problem over in the "2.3L I-4 (plus 2.3L Turbo)" section.

hmm..

No mods here either.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that the dealership won't find anything wrong and I'm just going to have to learn to live with this.

Why would you put your car into neutral while driving?

When an issue like this pops up I'm going to try everything I can to try to isolate the problem.
If the revs had dropped back to idle when thrown in neutral, then it would be a different issue all together.

I'm sure most people would have tried the same thing.

Does the engine actually rev up or just the tach? I have a problem where my 'tach' will bounce will I jump into neutral (6s MTX), but the motor itself isn't jumping around speed.

If the engine itself is reving up from normal idle to mid 1000s, chances are you have a vaccum leak somewhere and causing idle surge. Pretty common problem on MAF metered vehicles.

There is a TSB for this problem and mine was fixed by Stockton Mazda for the same problem. I noticed it more about 50 mph going downhill and letting off the gas. I could sit and watch the tachometer bounce from 1200 - 1600 and it was quite annoying. The fix is a recalibration of the ECM and to date ( 4 weeks) it is in fact gone. Hope that helps.

I recently noticed a similar problem with my 6. I have a MTX and its a 4 cylinder. I noticed when I slow down and come to a stop in first gear, my tachometer revs up by itself with my foot off the gas to about between 2000-3000 RPMs, it happened to me twice in one day, but not all the time. I will be taking the car in soon to find out what the problem is and I also reported to the Car Recall place there number is 1800-424-9393. I don't know if it will make a difference to report it, but if a significant amount of people report it they may consider it a recall, which will allow us to get this problem fixed after the warrantly expires...Just a suggestion.

To add to the solution side...a TCM (transmission control module) update was just released in the previous WDS update for the 6i ATX.

Call your dealers and verify that they have WDS version 37.3 (or later), then go in for a TCM update.
