It looks that everyone is worring that the transmission on 2003/4 6s ATX might fail early. What's the approximate cost to replace it, parts and labor? Would factory warrnaty cover it? Would extended warranty cover it (I believe Mazda said it covers everything)?

If a transmission were to fail then, yes, Mazda would cover it under the factory standard and the extended warranty. But it's exceedingly rare for a transmission to fail. Even horribly crappy ones will last well over 100K (I'm talking as a whole, every make will have some bad ones that will fail anywhere in the middle) in which case no warranty will be in effect.

I am on my second tranny. Mine failed at 42,000 and was replaced under warranty. I gather that at 90 dollars an hour for labor plus the tranny I was looking at almost a $4,000 job. I don't know what the labor rates are at your dealer but that would effect cost also.

Mine went bad due to a faulty solenoid inside the tranny.

Very true, some will inevitably fail however there haven't been enough failures so far to start worrying. When we start seeing failure after failure before 50k miles then it's time to start thinking about replacement costs. My 626 had a crappy cd4e and it still lasted for about 70k miles. Some even managed to push it further so it's still too early to tell. Barring any electrical/computer problems we should expect to see service well beyond the 100k mark with a tranny cooler and a good fluid service interval.

Warranty should cover any kind of all out failure like that. If a solenoid or pressure switch goes out or something to that effect, then it's fault of the builder. Especially inside 50k.

I am considering buying the extended warranty because I have begun to experience some problems with my '04 6s. It has 15k on it. Surely I could decide when I have 49998 on it right?
