Thanks ! I don't feel safe assuming it's the same wires for the 2nd Gen though so I guess I'll have to open my door panel...
The wires also seem hard to reach behind the glove box...they imeediately are snugged along the engine bay far from the footwell so I wonder how I will be able to splice into them in such a small space... |

Hi there- I just completed this modification last week. Rather than trying to access the tightly-bound wiring harness behind the glove box , I decided to go a different way. I dropped the overhead maplight assembly, and attached my + and - wires to the back of the maplight circuit. Each maplight has convenient round terminals with open holes. Check which is + and - with your test light, crimp on insulated ring connectors to your wiring (16/18 ga speaker wire is fine for this application) and use a small sheet metal screw to screw right into the maplight terminals---no cutting or splicing into anything!!! While I was up there I added wiring for some blue led lighting too. I installed a small rheostat dimmer switch so I can adjust the intensity of the blue footwell lighting while I drive
![]() The white and blue 6-led strips I used are inexpensive ($12.95/pr) and available at--- WALMART!! They even come with self-stick tape backing for easy application. Simply tuck in the added wiring from the back of the maplight assembly into the edge of the headliner, and guide your wiring to the L and R side windshield piller moldings. GENTLY pry the plastic molding out ( NOT off) from the TOP- it is designed to tilt out about 1 inch to allow the airbag to release. Guide your wires BEHIND the airbag and down to the underside of the dashboard. Connect your led leads to the wires- white stripe to + and black to - and stick'em up. No resistors or anything else is required. The cool thing about this mod is that the white leds come on exactly like the overhead lights, and will dim out the same way too. They can even be turned on manually with the overhead switch. The blue leds add a nice cockpit lighting accent while driving. Hope this helps--- |

@MazdaMP sorry to burst your bubble but the WALMART led strips are a rip off. I just bought a 12" led strip off ebay for $1. Much more cost effective.
To me, your way of routing the wires is far too much trouble but nice job at how you did it. Id rather just tap into the door light wiring. Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App

Interesting idea but I also find it comlpicated to pass the wires along the pillars when it's already there in the footwell...
Can someone with a 2nd Gen confirm the ground wire is also yellow/black and the + wire is blue/red four our courtesy lights ? Thanks ! |
