Sorry, kind of a joke but not. I'm fishing for a VSS wire connection and it seems that the cluster is CAN bus and VSS is nowhere to be found outside of the engine bay on the 2009 Mazda6

Is this the case, or did I miss something? (sounding like a broken record) The official docs are NOT as helpful as others I've run across in the past

Correct.
The VSS signal goes straight into the TCM (transaxle control module) and is sent via CAN to the other systems.

I just found that NAV uses a white wire on the speedometer which also goes to the amp (presumably for audiopilot). I'm going to try and tap this to see if this does, indeed, do the trick (at the AMP, not the cluster, so it's less obvious).

ALSO, I noticed NO VSS setup on the M/T section of the manual . . . somehow it's gotta know how fast the wheels are going, so I'm still digging on that front.

I'm hoping that white wire talks the right language for the AVIC.

I GOT IT!

White with silver dots (says it's white). It's on the amp harness with the most pins (no large gauge wires).

It's on the corner on the opposite side of the lock-tab.

I'm going to do a full layout of all known pins so the next guy has it easier . . .

Also, the wiring under that area (passenger kick) looks to be sufficent gauge to power a smallish amp (under 400w). Something like those "plug n pray" replacements from Alpine (if you got the cash) may even fit in there

If it's the wire I'm seeing in my diagram, it goes to the cluster (and the NAV, Lights/Wipers control module/Seat position module/sunroof motor).
Why would it need to go to all those systems?

Wiper control module is part of the headlight module; wipers are speed sensitive in a lot of vehicles (even my 03 cr-v had speed sensitive wipers.) Nav is for dead-reckoning. Audio is for automatic volume adjustment.

No clue what's up with the sunroof/seat position.

After doing the stereo wiring colors in another thread, i realized I had missed the VSS wire that was plainly labeled in the diagram. Sorry about that.

Not sure which diagram you have - but it's not like it says "VSS" in the official docs. It just says it goes to the cluster, which could technically be anything. The actual harness also says that it's only there for nav, not to mention it COULD have been some proprietary digital setup (like a native CAN signal) . . . fortunately they're not that industrious at Bose At least you tried.

There's got to be a first person to try everything . . . I don't mind being the guinea pig if I'm the one making the guesses (nice way of saying I'm an attention whore -- hey, whores need love too right? ).

Let's hope it inspires the next guy to do something new and cool.

Next Step: Run 16ga wire for speakers and bypass the stock crap, then get a DEI 545T to do a smarter version of "Illum"
