2016 Factory Navi add-on

For all those who just bought a 2016 6 without Navi, our cars are pre-wired for Navigation. All of the hardware are installed on the car, literally the only thing you need is an SD card with maps Mazda Part# BHY1-79-EZXA - which is also the same for 2015 Mazda 3 and 2016 CX-5. Dealer wants $399 + $110 for one hour labor ( to put a f**n SD card into the SD slot in the armrest compartment) I don't think I have ever laughed so hard in my life at someone's face. They go for much cheaper online. Just thought I'd share with everyone. I just ordered mine.

P.S. be careful buying on ebay. The SD card locks on to the VIN after it has been installed and driven with for 62 miles. If you try to reinstall it in another Mazda it will give out an error message. So don't buy a used one.

Was wonder if you make a backup copy or made a duplicate of the SD card?

Sorry but even if I could, I wouldn't engage in illegal actions. Either way, SD card has a VIN lock and cannot be used (or a copy of it cannot be used) in another vehicle.

no i'm not talking about for sale but for yourself. I mean like backup your computer but you backup the sd card just in case the sd card doesn't work. It happened before for a microsd card and I had to get it replaced. I just wonder if you can backup the sd card for save keepings, if the sd breaks or doesn't read anymore and you would have to spend $400 for dealer to get you a new one. I meant to say that can you make a copy with your own VIN so that if something goods wrong you still have a sd card for the nav and not have to shred out $400 at the dealer.

Yes, you can make a backup of the SD card. Download Mazda Toolbox and it will give you this option. My GF successfully restored this backup using the same software to a new SD card for her '14 Mazda3's nav system. Ignore warnings from the software about this not being possible.

This was done for performance reasons but does also create a duplicate locked to your car. KEEP THE ORIGINAL as it's required for warranty repairs.

The new SD card was a 40MB/s rated SanDisk Ultra and made the nav system nearly instantaneous to use.

I put the same card in my '14 Mazda6 and it roughly halved the loading times on its TomTom unit. Simply copy/paste and rename the SD card for the TomTom models.

The cars with the TomTom system rely on a separate hardware module that sits behind the small door near the traction control/SCBS override/etc buttons. It's my understanding that it's just a tiny storage compartment on cars without it.

Yes I have done this as well. It doesn't really speed up the interaction with the unit but it makes the boot time of Tom Tom a lot faster. If you need full instructions on how to do this let me know and I can find the site that has the specific step by step instructions. It the process is straight forward but also very particular.

I tested this last night. I had a class10 90mb/s card that I tested out. I see 0 improvement in initial loading or further interaction. Then again, I have the '16 which uses Navteq and not TomTom crap, so mine wasn't slow to begin with.
Instructions are simple. Download MazdaTools, insert factory SD card, click backup, replace SD card with blank one, click restore LOL
Either way, thanks for recommending this, now I have a backup if I ever need it.

Oddly enough, that card may not be perfectly suited for this application. Any card with that rating is likely meant for fast sequential writes (DSLR workload) when what you need is fast random reads. This is why I went with an Ultra instead of something nicer.

Here's some informal tests on the TomTom unit.
