I have a i Touring, got it a month ago. I ordered the iPod Universal Integration Module for 2009 Mazda 6. I also needed to buy the harness and everything.
Now I want to install it. Is it possible for me alone to install it or should I take it to the Mazda service center?
There seems to be a lot of stuff to do, with removing components and I just don't want to mess it up with my new car.
HELP!

Yes, you can do it yourself. Your kit should have come with detailed instructions for this.

Note: The following instructions are for iPod integration module (F197 79 CFZ) and Harness Kit F (C9F4 V6 029), installed in a 2009 Mazda 6 GT (6 cyl).

Vehicle state:
1. If Auto-X, Set selector to D (Set your parking brake).
2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Under-cover removal:
1. Pull down on the front of the cover under your glove box, then pull toward the rear of the vehicle to remove.

Glove compartment removal:
1. Open the glove-box and pull the stay-damper off the pin on the right side.
2. Squeeze the back inside of the compartment and lower the box.
3. Pull glove-box off hinges.

Upper panel removal (Center console panel w/ cupholders under flip-door):
1. Pull the front edge of the panel upward, releasing clips along the sides and then lifting the rear of the panel (is your parking brake handle up?).

Decoration panel removal:
1. Gently pull upward on the trim piece to the left of the shifter. When you get to the top section by the steering column, pull those clips toward the rear of the vehicle.
2. Do the same for the passenger side trim piece, pulling on on the narrow section and rear-ward on the section above the glove-box.

Shift panel removal:
1. Remove the shifter handle by unscrewing it and lift the shift panel up, releasing the hooks all the way around.

Center panel removal:
1. Pull upward on the edge of the center panel (the 'bar' in front of the shifter rod), releasing the clips along the sides, working your way up toward the climate control knobs.
2. Disconnect seat warmer switch, power socket, and start button (if equipped).

Climate control unit removal:
1. Remove four screws and pull unit from dash.
2. Disconnect connectors.

Center upper panel removal:
1. Wrap a small prying tool with tape (the soft dash is very forgiving but it's better to be safe) and pry the corners under the center vents.
2. There is a hook under the hazard button so do not pull the panel upward.
3. Slide the panel toward the rear of the vehicle to remove it.
4. Disconnect the hazard switch, info display connector and microphone (if equipped).

NAV unit removal (Stereo unit is probably similar):
1. Remove three screws and bolt, pull system out from dash.
2. Disconnect all cable connections and remove unit.

*I'll finish this after work tomorrow. Zzz...

Preperation for iPod integration module installation:
1. Fold a pad protector in half longways and cut two slits in the fold.
2. Pass one of the large zip ties through the two slits with the ends exiting on the top (non-adhesive) side of the pad.
3. Remove the adhesive backing on the prep'd pad and attach perpendicular next to the large connector on the long edge of the module. (Same side with the large connector on the opposite edge)
4. Place a second pad (no zip tie) on the other side of the connector.
5. Fold the long ends of both pads down over the sides of the module.
6. Turn the module so that the pads are facing up and the zip tie is on the right. Attach a double sided adhesive pad to the side facing you.
7. Plug the harness and iPod connection cable intot he module.
(These pads prevent damage and noise from road vibration.)

iPod module installation:
1. Look at the dash under-structure to the right of where the stereo would be, through the glove-box opening. There is a vertical beam attached to a bracket extending rearward with two holes in it.
2. Attach one pad protector to the rearward facing bracket.
3. Cut a second pad in half and affix it on either side of the vertical beam where the bracket attaches.
4. Install the iPod integration module to the prepared dash beam structure with the pre-applied double sided pad on the module.
5. Secure the zip tie to the beam.

Route the cables (avoid sharp edges to prevent broken connections and shorts):
1. Snake the harnessto behind the stereo/nav area. Connect the end connector of the harness to the 16-pin connector that previously connected to the stereo.
2. The second 16-pin connector will plug into the back of your stereo/nav unit.
3. Use small wire ties to secure the new harness.
4. Route the CAN wires up through the dash toward the info display connector (I found it tricky to get it behind the AC ducting).
5. The two CAN wires have "electro-taps" on them and will connect to wires on the back of the 12-pin info display connector.
6. Viewing the info display connector on the harness side, the two pins you will be taping into are the first two on the bottom row (with the connector tab facing up). Terminal L on the left and Terminal J on the right.
7. Terminal L is Blue w/ Red stripe and the CAN - (black) wire connects to it. Terminal J is Gray w/ Red stripe and the CAN + (red) wire connects to it.
8. Tie the wires to the existing harnesses. Bundle extra wire at the glove box, zip tie and tuck into the dash. Make sure all wires will be out of the way of the glove box.
9. Route the iPod connection cable into the glove box when you reattach it.

Reassembly:
1. Reverse the above instructions to reassembly the dash and console.

Check and reinitialization:
1. Reconnect the battery cable and return the shifter to P or N.
2. Do not start the engine but put the vehicle in the ACC or ON position. DO NOT turn off the vehicle while the NAV initializes with the following screen: Program reading: Do not turn the power off.
3. Disconnecting the battery causes the DSC indicator light to become inoperable.
a. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
b. Turn the steering wheel completely to the right and then completely to the left.
c. Verify that the DSC indicator light goes out.
d. Turn the ignition switch off and then turn it to the ON position again.
e. Verify that the DSC OFF indicator light goes out.
4. When the battery is disconnected, the windows will not fully open and close automatically.
a. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
b. Press the switch and fully open the window.
c. Pull up the switch and continue holding for about 2 seconds to fully close the window.

I hope all that made sense. If anything is hard to understand, let me know and I can scan the illustrations.

I would think so, but I honestly can't say for sure.

edit: is your old 6 a nav or just stereo? The harnesses differ.

I actually am getting it done in the service center tomorrow. I just don't want to be clumsy and ruin the interior. There is a lot to be done. If you are good at being a handyman, you can try. There is a detailed set of instructions with the items, although the pictures were a bit screwed up. They don't show the actual location clearly.

is there THAT much of a difference in sound quality over the AUX input, or do people want to charge their ipod also?

the charging capability is a good one for a long trip. i used an old fm transmitter as a charging station.
but yes, i find the module a much better option as otherwise the ipod needs to be set at max volume or so or the volume limit has to be played with.
and the most important, all ipod controls are now transferred to the steering wheel and it just makes my life easier.
