Hi everyone,

I've been going through the forum and seeing how everyone mounted a 7" LCD to their map pocket, and I have to say I'm very impressed what what I've seen. It's got me all charged up to do my own.

However, while browsing through the web looking for parts to do this, I came across http://www.tradekey.com/selloffer_view/id/426674.htm

I was wondering if anyone else has bumped into it, or even ordered it. It seems somewhat reasonable at $400 (since it includes the screen), but it's not a touchscreen, so it's pretty useless to me. However, I was thinking of contacting them to see if they might make a touchscreen model, or if I can purchase the item with no screen at a reduced price.

I was also throwing around the idea of seeing how many units they'd require for a quantity purchase, and either selling the excess on Ebay or doing a group buy.

Comments anyone?

-----------------
Edit: I fixed the link (I think)

Update:

I've been asked to summarize what's going on in this thread. Kinda makes since since it's a billion pages long at this point.

The story so far....

We've joined forces with another Mazda6 club in Spain and have been in contact with the company that produces this motorized monitor mount (CarAvTrade is the name of the company).

The problem with the existing monitor is that it's composite-only, making it a poor choice for use with a carputer. Many of us also wanted a touchscreen.

At first we got them to agree to sell units without the screens for about $170.00 each, and people would try to insert their own monitors. There were several problems with this.

1. Shipping from China was outrageous (about $90.00 for a single unit). We were going to cut this down with a group buy, but we ran into the second problem...

2. We were also informed that there would be electronic work required. Apparently, the electronics that control opening and closing the housing were part of the monitor, not part of the housing. It comes with the limit switches and motors, but no control unit.

Because of this, we decided to hold off on the group-buy of the raw housing, however, several members (GuardianAngel in the UK and 4U2NV in NJ) decided to go out on a limb to buy it on their own, regardless of the technical requirements and exorbitant shipping prices. We were going to wait for these couple guinea pigs to receive the unit, and then decide on the group buy.

Meanwhile, one of our members (Spidy) got in contact with the Mazda6 forums in Spain. As it turns out, they were trying to do the exact same thing with the same unit. One of their members (MazdaSpain) had been in contact with CarAvTrade and had actually received one of their Composite units as they were being sold. He now frequents this board to cooridnate our dealings with CarAvTrade.

After numerous emails from MazdaSpain and several members here on our board, CarAvTrade agreed that creating a new motorized monitor with VGA and Touchscreen would probably be a viable product, and decided to engineer a prototype.

Meanwhile, we've been building a list of people interested in this unit, which now numbers close to 40 people in the US and at least 15 more world wide. The more people that are seriously interested in this, the more likely it is that CarAvTrade will decide to make this into a full-blown product.

The first ProtoType is now done, and they soon expect to send it to MazdaSpain for evaluation. We don't have word on the price, but hoping it isn't much more than the original unit was (which was $460.00 and shipping).

As this goes on, I plan to help 4U2NV with the empty unit he purchased (he prefered to use his existing Xenarc over the Lilliput). This will hopefully provide an additional option for those who want to install their own monitors into an empty housing.

Ugh... I guess I should have tested it. Not really sure why it didn't go. Here's the link raw:

http://www.tradekey.com/selloffer_view/id/426674.htm

And I'll try this again: [post=http://www.tradekey.com/selloffer_view/id/426674.htm]Link[/post]

Ya, it does seem nice. Too bad they don't have a better description. I was trying to dig more info about the company but came up blank.

It would be much nicer if I could stick in my own screen. I think a touchscreen is pretty essential, plus I'd want to make sure the res is at least 800x480.

It's not as sexy as building your own, but I'm an electrical engineer, not a mechanical engineer... and I'd rather spend my time trying to figure out the protocol communicating to the LCD display so I can hook it up to a carputer... or even better, having it directly wired to my radar detector.

Actually, I'd suspect it already has a VGA input. *shrug*

Anyway, I've shipped off an email inquiring about the unit. I'm wondering if maybe I could convince one of the Mazda parts places to carry this. It seems like it's very close to what everyone wants... If only it were touchscreen and higher (800x480) res.

I doubt that it is VGA. It would specify that or for CarPC use if it was. The navigation reference means that it is likely RGB and has analog RCA inputs for video games, etc.

Seen a number of items from that site and others from China that has been posted on mp3car.com. The vast majority (like 99%) have NOT been VGA.

Yeah, I guess it's just wishfull thinking.

I DID bring up the fact that a lot of people seem to be using the lilliput touchscreen in my email to them. I don't know how committed they are to the screen they're currently including. Hmm... come to think of it, I'm just hoping they understand my message. Lookinga t their ads, English doesn't seem to be one of their strong points.

I looking for the same... Anything that hides into console, with 7" with VGA and good resolution. Don't really care about touchscreen, but it will be great. Still no luck.
