Exclamation ATX Light (Complete with CEL)

This started about 30k miles back and has been happening more frequently it would seem. (2 year period) At first it would be months and now lately it seems 1-2x a month. I am avoiding the dealer here in town because I hate dealerships. But it's looking like I am not gonna have a choice.

I've got 2.3 (4speed Auto)

The issue is I will be driving down the road at cruising speed and all of a sudden my car jerks very hard and shifts down into 3rd. (4th > 3rd) This is accompanied with a CEL and AT light. My car drives smoothly after that and will shift smoothly from 3>2>1 and back up 1>2>3 without any issue. Except for the obvious fact that 4th gear refuses to work.

The only way I can get around this is to turn the car off and then back on. When I do this, the AT light is off and the car runs like normal, like before, but I now have 4th gear back. The CEL is left on however. This will go off eventually. I'm sure after a certain amount of times I turn the car off/on. (Today just happened to be the only time it actually "fixed" itself)

The obvious thing I looked up was, do I get a trans flush? I have yet to take it to a shop to scan the code. Doing a search on the forums didn't yield me anything and the codes those people brought up had nothing to do with a transmission problem.

I guess, I'm more or less curious if anyone else has had this issue with the car and or other cars and what that problem was? I'm dreading having to hear that my trans is a POS and I have to sacrifice my first born to replace it.

I didnt have that exact problem but i would recommend getting the code pulled so that you know what the car is thinking. See if there is any 6r around that has a scangauge to help out or go to the shop. What i encounterd was when i was going slow in 1st the car would buck and shift to 2 secong hard and the TCS light would flash and then go out and the AT light would come on and stay one for a few minutes. Car drove fine other than that. I brought it in to the dealer,(under warranty) and one of my sensors was going out. I would have to look at the work order when i get home since it has been a few years. Hopefully in your sake it is a sensor not your tranny.

keep us posted

So i went though my records and if you pull the code and you get a p0715 your input turbine speed sensor might be malfunctioning. That is what was replaced on my car when this issue arose. Hopefully you can track down your issue

Looks easy for the most part. Now I gotta find a cheap place to buy this thing. The service guy said he would have to reprogram the TCM too, is this required?

(Transflush done too at half the price the dealer was gonna do it for)

Next up, replacing my front right caliper.

Thanks for the info guys!
