My transmission has been running a little rough lately and today it went into the red before shifting. I checked the fluid when I got home and it looks like the fluid is low so I need to add some fluid before I go anywhere far.

I have the 06 v6 with the atx so i need the t-iv fluid. I don't know what brand or anything is in there now. Can I add a synthetic to it to top it off or do I need to add just a normal ATF?

Local shops should have a non-synthetic T-IV. Don't use anything that doesn't specifically say 'T-IV compatible'. Some here have reported failures when even the Mazda service used the wrong (Mercon) fluid. Some say that Mobil says their ATF is T-IV compatible, but I don't recall anyone ever finding that listed on the bottle.

I bought a couple quarts of T-IV from Toyota and they told me it was synthetic or semi-synthetic. However, the bottle makes no such claim.

I use Redline D4 and love it.

I took a longer look this time and it looks like there is too much fluid in the transmission. I'm not sure if all dipsticks for the mazdas are the same, but mine has to notches for checking it cold or hot, and then a twist in the stick. The fluid goes up to almost the twist. I'm not sure why there is so much.

And when I decide to do a drain and refill, i definitely want to switch to amsoil or redline d4. Can i mix that with what is in there?

Redline is fine with mixing. I would easily wager that Amsoil would be as well.

I believe all formulas of ATF expand - it's the nature of it. I don't think I've ever seen a car/tranny that didn't have a hot and cold mark.

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate the help. While I was waiting for you to respond I went out and did the brake light mod in the dark. It looks amazing.

I need to go buy a cheap floor jack so I can do the transmission drain/fill. I might as well get a cooler and inline filter while I'm at it. I get this feeling that if I don't do all of the extra stuff the transmission will go south on me.

By the way, I just noticed the comment in your sig about the glass being half empty/full. Not sure if you have heard this one but as an engineer, I see the glass as inefficient.

If I saw this thread first I would have replied here instead of in the other thread that you posted in. My bad. Anyways in the other thread you said your car has 49,000 miles on it and with a 50,000 mile warranty I would go to a dealership and have them fix it for free. The way I see it in the other thread you said you had a trans flush done at thirty thousand miles and if you've gone over 15,000 miles without any problems since then and something is starting to develop now I would think you have a transmission problem or a transmission leak. Whatever it is the dealership should fix it for free.

The warranty ended at 48,000 miles.

That sucks to hear man. I could have sworn for an 06 Mazda it was 4 years 50,000 miles. Do you have a dealership where you normally take it in for service? If so sometimes they will still warranty it even though your over on miles as long as its only by a thousand miles or so. Hell even if you don't have a regular dealership you go to I would at least call and explain the situation and sometimes they will honor the warranty anyways.

I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the idea. I bought the car from my dad and he told me the warranty was for 48000 miles. He still has the paperwork so I'll bug him about it when I go to my parents house.

I got mine new in 06 and replaced the trans at mazda's cost due to the tsb put out on that tranny after the problems became evident. I had 48,800 on mine. Warranty was till 50k.

As an operations manager, I see the glass as in adequate AND we are not producing enough water efficiently
