Thumbs down

Regarding the 2005 Mazda6 with the new Aisin Warner 6 Speed automatic
transaxle, this unit requires a special ATF called JWS3309. This new fluid
is NOT compatible with Dexron II/III or Mercon and Mercon 5. Dealers may
even 'top off' the ATX with the wrong fluid or internal damage will occur
soon after .
The new 6 speed ATX in the 2005 Mazda 6s's use a Toyota Type T-IV fluid known as JWS3309. This fluid can not mix with Mercon or Dexron fluids. A single half a cup of the WRONG fluid will completely destroy the transmission by causing the clutch packs to lock up, requiring a complete rebuild of the transmission to restore functionality.

The fluid is "supposedly" gold (I originally said blue) in color, and should not be mistaken for the standard red colored Mercon V fluid. Regardless, please make sure both the dealer, and whatever service department your using (especially quickie lubes as they sometimes "top off" fluids), is aware of this difference, and that failure to adhere to the stock fluid specifications WILL RESULT in TRANSMISSION FAILURE.

Once again, this only applies to the 6 speed 2005 Mazda 6s Aisin Warner Automatic Transmission.

CROSSBOW - One would assume your information is correct. You, THE POSTING PUBLIC, knowing more than the dealer. While your car is important to you. Your car your model is one of many who pass through the service doors of a Mazda dealership. It's the dealers job to FIX and and all problems our customers bring to us.

A quick look at all service information for the new tranny shows nothing. It's my guess most dealers have individuals capable of addressing all issues. It's up to the manufacturer to provide information to it's dealers. At this point there is nothing. It's been added to the list of no information from Mazda on how to's

wait a few days at the most... you'll see it, at least your service department should see it. Some of us know a little more then the posting public... which is why we do a service (such as list all TSB's etc on mazda6tech.com) and have fun at the same time!

When you're in sales and service has gone home hours ago and a question comes up. After watching the traffic pass on the highway, sometimes the brain farts. Gosh look in the owners manual.

04 aUto transaxle fluid ATF M-V

05 DITTO 2.3 ATF M-V
3.0 ATF T-1V

buzzard,

Its not mazda's responsibility to replace the transmission if a quickie lube shops pours mercon V into the transmission unknowingly...or if the owner does the same. That falls out of warranty as its user negligence. Of course if the service department at a dealer does it, thats of course covered.

Regardless this is important information for everyone to be aware of, as both the 6i and 6s ATX's prior to 05 use standard Mercon V fluid...the fear is someone would trade in their 03 6s ATX for an 05 6s ATX, and then try to pour their leftover Redline D4 into the tranny, not realizing the specs had completely changed.

From the interior, the 6spd transmission shift gate looks identical to the previous jatco 5 spd, and the average individual won't even be able to tell that the 6 spd is in the car. My guess is mazda is keeping the whole " 6 spd ATX" on the down low, to try to avoid 04 6s ATX's from being stockpiled. I'd assume the public would be more aware of the new 6spd after the dealer inventories have been purged of most of the remaining 2004's and mazda begins aggressively marketing the new transmission.

As for obtaining this type of information...thats most likely in the hands of your service department. I don't know how the discussions between sales and tech usually goes, but most dealerships I've been too have a rather large seperation between those two organizations, with little communication occuring between the two. So thus I wouldn't expect the sales persons to be notified of such changes, as its doesn't effect the sales pitch of the vehicle.

I'm sure its sitting in the owners manual though, and hopefully on the dipstick. But since neither of those are routinely read by owners...

I do hate the idea of a dipstickless tranny but this new 6-speed would probably be a good candidate. Does it have a dipstick and drainplug?

Yes...and the dipstick is reportedly difficult to read =/...aka the "MUST USE Toyota Type T-IV isn't really in big, noticable letters.

Scott and I have cross posted this on as many forums as possible, if you see one we missed, do please post this information and sticky it. Its unbelievably critical.

News Flash Indeed it, 6-speed Auto, requires a special fluid. At this time JWS3309 ATF is not available through Mazda. But don't worry it's not special:

Ford has a product XT-8QAW
Volvo 1161540
Toyota T-1V
Mobil JWS 3309
GM GM 9986195

Everyone is always looking for ways to save money. Joe and his brother Jim have a shop called JJ's. Why pay what the dealer wants for service?

Probably because depending on your area, all the service departments around you could be incompetent...you know, doing things like forgetting to put oil in the car after a change, or leaving the oil filter off...like Darcars in Silver Spring MD. (Their service department is so bad, its not even ranked).

Needless to say, the consumer having this information can help reinforce the dealers to "remember" to put in the proper fluid...considering almost all the other ATX's mazda deals with are either dexron or mercon.

Not all dealerships are as careful as yours buzzard...some I won't even let rotate my tires. (nothing like gashes on your rims after a simple balance/rotation to reveal to you the quality of a service department that cares)
