So.... I was getting gas today. Oddly enough I believe this is the first time ever getting gas in the day light. Any ways I saw for the first time a sticker on the gas lid cover which says "premium Fuel Recommended". I've never put premium fuel in the car, it runs fine. But is not putting in premium fuel going to cause long term issues?

So you have a 1st gen? They're supposed to run on 87 octane.

87 Octane is fine - but if you want to shell out the extra cash for premium it certainly won't be any worse than 87. I run premium once a month to clean things out - I go to Shell because they have that Nitrogen enriched gas that's been proven to help engines.
Some people don't say they feel a difference, but my car was always very happy after a couple days of running on premium.

Can you just mix or do I need to empty the tank first, meaning wait till the gas light come on.

You're good to mix, but out of good practice I'd at least get down under a quarter of a tank before switching to premium - personal preference.

It should run on "regular" 87 octane.
Check the manual. Mine says on page 4-2: Your Mazda will perform best with fuel listed in the table. Fuel Octane Rating* (Anti-knock index) Regular unleaded fuel 87 [ (R+M)/2 method] or above (91 RON or above) * U.S. federal law requires that octane ratings be posted on gasoline station pumps. Fuel with a rating lower than 87 octane (91 RON) could cause the emission control system to lose effectiveness. It could also cause engine knocking and serious engine damage. Gasoline blended with oxygenates such as alcohol or ether compounds are generally referred to as oxygenated fuels. The common gasoline blend that can be used with your vehicle is ethanol blended at no more than 10%. Gasoline containing alcohol, such as ethanol or methanol, may be marketed under the name “Gasohol”.

![]() Unless you're tuned or have an MS6, if you're in the US, regular unleaded is all you need. Save the $$$ you'll waste on premium and buy a bottle of Techron every other oil change or so. Your car will thank you.
