Unhappy Scrape after start

Starter quit on me last week, I replaced it with a rebuilt one (I didn't want to play almost 3x for an OEM part).

The car starts great - however, right after it starts I will hear a very brief scrape. (similar to what you hear if you try to start while the car is already on)

Since this was not an issue before I replaced the starter, I am convinced it has something to do with the new starter itself or its installation, I am guessing the noise is from the bendix as it may be having trouble releasing from the flywheel?

I was wondering if anybody ever was required to shim their starter when they replaced it? I'm not sure if its a clearance problem (too tight?) or maybe a poorly rebuilt starter, I know it wouldn't be the first time for that.

I was doubting having to shim the starter right off the bat, more common with older cars... so I replaced the starter again through warranty exchange, and I am glad I did.

Car has started great every time since.

Mine has done this since day one (bought brand new in March of 2003). They replaced it under factory recall in the first year when I took it in for service, didn't even complain about it or ask for it to be replaced, but the new one still hangs like the original did. However the "new" one is now 8 years old and it's doing just fine.

Could be clutch dust build up, but I would take it off and inspect the teeth.

if there is grinding you don't want a cheap starter tearing up a good flywheel and costing a whole lot more.

For me, it sounds a little concerning not hearing it with OEM starter and hearing it with this one, especially if it means possible damage to the flywheel...

I've been reading a lot about clutch dust, so I will have keep that in mind for the future, when I pulled out the original after it failed, it was caked with it.

After replacing the starter a second time, I took a look at the flywheel teeth and they don't look compromised,

With the 2nd replacement starter, the car has been started around 15 times now and I have not heard a grind after start once. So it must have been something wrong with the original replacement. Looks like this issue has been solved.

Did you replace the starter yourself? How hard was it to get to, and inspect?

Now if only I could find that damn write up on it..
