Car is '06 6i ATX. When the weather is cool-cold (50's and below) I get a grinding/popping noise front the front of the car when taking off from a stop. The noise is worse when the engine is under a strain, like taking off on an incline. At first I thought it was suspension related, but I never really noticed it while driving over bumps, potholes, etc, so suspension movement (compression/rebound) doesn't seem at fault here. It kinda sounds like a CV joint, but it doesn't make the noise when turning or when the car is underway, only from a stop. I was under the car today and inspected the bushings, but can see no visible sign of a problem. I'm kinda at a loss here. I had the dealer look at it last fall, but as usual, they gave me that "could not replicate" BS. Any advice on how to identify the noise a bad mount makes would be greatly appreciated!

Usually you will hear a thud from the engine rocking forward/backward. As excessive engine movement will cause the engine, exhaust etc. to hit other parts of the car. Excessive engine movement is another indicator.Only way to be 100% sure is to visually inspect the mounts.
You are on to something though as it is usually the bone mount that goes bad first in the 6. GL

Hmm....I wouldn't describe the noise as a "thud" per say, as in the engine moving enough to make contact with something else. It's more of a grinding/popping, sort of like metal on metal, but dampened, if that makes sense. I also thought it could be a coil spring isolator bushing that had worn through and was letting the end of the spring grind against the control arm. Whatever it is, I cannot replicate it while the car in in motion. It only happens when taking off from a stop, and is a constant noise for about 2 seconds and it stops. It really seems like the engine moving a bit is what causes it. I'm really stumped with this one!

I would really think it is a mount. Check every one. Driver's side, Passenger's side, wishbone mount and the transmission mount as well.

Look for any tears in the rubber. But be careful because the driver/passenger mounts sorta has a rip from manufacturing so it can be mistaken for a bad mount.

The tear should look more like a crack if that makes sense.
